As against thA gorge and break in the Horse Creek Flume,
it may be some comfort to the owpers to know that thP.re is a great
deal of early snoi in the mountains, wh i ch is far better for irri -gation purposes than a later snow would be, because early snow
dr·i.t'ts in gulches and i s packed down b~r later snows , and makes the flow of water not onl~r greater in summer time, but more constant.

If I am expected to continue to avail myself of Mr.Haw-k in s ' advice, I wish that you would telegraph him that the Horse Cre ek Flume needs his attention, and ask him to wire me when it will

Dear Sir:
I have just received thi$ mornine, letters, copies of
l
which I enclose you herewith for wour general information. I have
'
not communicated with Judge Rqp;ers as !r-et, but the letter fro~ Mr. 1
Atkins, who was the president the defunct Colorado SavinGS Bank
and who was st:r.·ongly interested in the opposition to our plans, is evidencA to me that they are weakening.
ThP. particularly interesting part of this letter·, is the
fact of their wanting to make an attack on the Denver National Bank,
by reason of its having secured a loan of $250,000 from the
Equita-ble Company. I should like to have you deny this, as I do not be-lieve this is true. There is no tr·ouble about an attack being made on the First National Bank of Denver, b~ these people.
Of course you must consider these letters in the strictest possible confidence.
Yours very respectfully, •

Since writing you a few moments ago in regard to expenses,
there are a few things mor·e I want to say.
I go to Lamar· on a freight train this morning, to work up
a meetine; where r ·esolutions

passed asking the Governor tosell us the land. This after~oon I come back here, where there will
'i
be a cantaloupe meeting. To-moi~ow I go to La Junta to meet
repre-sentatives from the different parts of the Valley, to try to
per-fect a cantaloupe organization covering the entire valley. F~om La
Junta I go to Denver to see if the newspapers cannot be gotten into
shape.to help us on Land Board matters. Next Saturday I meet the
officials of the Santa Fe and the Western Poultry & Game Co. at Rocw
Ford, to consummate the settlement between the Rocky Ford people and
The Western Poultry & Game Co. In the meantime I am obliged to
live around with the farmers with a view to control the meeting of
the stockholders of the Fort Lyon Canal Co. in the early part of December.
I statA this simply to show you that I am pretty busy, and
that i . your lettAr in regard to expenditures is not promptly

I have decided that I will call Mr.Berry, Mr -Montgomery and Mr.
Seward together-, and have Mr.Berry and Mr.Montgomery make -
sugges-tions that will tend to save money, and if they think the methods
now pursued, are the cheapest way of accomplishing the results,, they
will make such a statement which will be incorporated in a letter·
to you. Every depa:r-tment and every det:ail of every depar-·tment will
be gone through thoroughly, and an explanation full and complete will be sent to you.
This will not be intended to be in the line of long,
expla-natory reasons for making the expenditures, but will be intended to
give you the fullest information of what is eoing on here, s~ that
the size of the business can be grasped and the importance of each
detail can be laid before you.
It- will then be possible for you to make s·uch specific suggestions or to give me such direct instructions as you might
wish to do, in which event, it is unnecessary for me to say, they
will be abeyed to the lette~.
Of course I want the enterprise to be a great succe s s, but
I don't want it to be a sucC'ess at the cost of your thtnking that
every suge estion and order· in New York, was not heartily and prompt:Y,
obeyed, and if you send me instructions as to cutting down expenses

G:overnor Adams has asked me to make this as much of a
Colorado Company· as possible. I want to raise a hue and cry
pu-blicly, that no water is to be carried to Kansas, in future, except
such water as is not needed in Colorado, and to say that it w-as at
the suggestion of the Colorado Management, that this plan was
adop-ted.
If this will make no diffe:r'ence between Close Br·os &: Co.,

Your favor of the 16th inst. is carefully noted. Orders
are orders, and , as you say , it does not fill the bill to writA long explanations as to why I think ce~tain expenses are necessary. I shall call together- v1r .Berry and Mr .Montgomery and have a very·
care-ful examination made and cut in every direction that is posslble.
I think however that a trip to Colorado by you in regard to this
matter, would be wise, or perhaps when I come on to New York, which I hope to he the lattP.r part of December·, I can answer some
of the criticisms which the gentlemen in interest make. Meanwhile everything will be done to keep down expenses.
When I have mor-e thoroughlJr digested your letter- and have
macla such changes as I think are possible, I will write ~rou furt-her. Yours very truly,
