nature at the centre in hörby
With the Fulltofta Nature Centre, Stiftelsen Skånska Landskap (Skåne Landscape Founda-tion), via the Municipality of Hörby, has restored both wetlands and farmland. The goal is not just to increase biodiversity and reduce nutrient inputs to the sea. The restoration work also forms part of a larger project, an information and training centre where the focus is on local cultural, nature and environmental issues.
The Fulltofta Nature Centre in the middle of Skåne is a successful example of the restoration of wetlands and farmland. With support from the local investment programme (LIP), wetlands, ponds and smaller watercourses have been created and restored, and the older farmed landscape has been restored and is now man-aged traditionally. These actions have increased biodiversity and reduced inputs of nutrients to the sea. The area has received more visitors, and the prospects for communicating nature, cultural and environmental issues have improved.

• Restored and created wetlands, ponds and smaller watercourses (around 78 ha). • Restored farmed landscape (87 ha). • Increased biodiversity and richer birdlife, including great egret and ferruginous pochard. • Reduced inputs of nutrients to Lake Ringsjön (around 4 tonnes of phosphorus and 78 tonnes of nitrogen per year). • Low operating cost, greater accessibility and more visitors.

imPLEmEntation
The restored acreage became larger than planned, but did not entail any additional costs as the land had already been purchased and required limited restoration in relation to its area. The operating costs are low, partly because of the good coop-eration with the forest administration and the Skåne Regional Museum. Broader regional policy support at the start would, however, been advantageous for the con-tinued operation and development of the project. The cooperation with the munici-pality has worked very well. The project has attracted great interest, and several new cooperative ventures have been initiated (see Further Information).

The Fulltofta Nature Centre is a popular destination for excursions by the gen-eral public, school classes and ornithologists. Birdlife and diversity in the area are expanding, nutrient inputs are decreasing and the number of visitors is rising. Special efforts have been made to provide easily accessible car parks, and a bird-watching tower adapted for the disabled is planned. There is information about the area in a nature exhibition, and a stork enclosure attracts large numbers of visitors.

The natural landscape, the natural resources and the biodiversity are to be preserved and used in a sustainable manner, by restoring the cultivated landscape and wetlands. wetlands have an important water-managing function. They serve as treatment plants, reduce flooding, contribute to a decrease in eutrophication and account for a significant proportion of biodiversity.
having access to and being able to spend time in nature is important for everyone. In the long term this can lead to greater environmental engagement. The restoration also boosted the attractiveness of the area and benefited biodiversity. Fulltofta nature Centre provides good opportunities to place cultural, nature and environmental issues in a natural context and communicate them to various target groups. FOr FUrTher InFOrMATIOn
