Beet Gro~s Sayi,
Not Enough Rail
Cars Available%/

RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP)
-Sugar beet growers in the
south-ern region of the Holly Sugar
Corp. growing area around
Riv-erton complained Friday about
the shortage of hopper cars to
haul beets to the factory.
One of the beet growers in the
Arapahoe-Mill Creek area, John
Wunder, said only 98 cars have
been allotted to the area. He
said they generally had about
200
cars in past years.
Wunder said if
it
had not
rained Friday, all of the hopper
cars would have been filled. He
added the farmers have had only
two good days of harvesting due
to the breakdown of the dump in
Riverton.
He said
only about
10
per cent
of the sugar beet crop has been
harvested.
Wunder said that due to the
'
breakdown, Holly is shipping the
bee
t
s from the Riverton area to
the factory in Torrington. He
taid each trip takes several
I
days.
The station agent for the
Chi-1. cago and Northwestern Railroad
in Riverton, Francis Soper, said
the railroad has been trying to
get Jllore cars, but cannot get
any for immediate usage.
At
Cheyenne,
meanwhile, Gov.
Stan Hathaway wired the
presi-dent of the railroad, urging the
delivery of more railroad cars
to the Riverton area to help
in
the beet harvest.
Hathaway appealed to railroad
officials for additional cars
"be-fore the freezing weather caus-1
es a severe economic loss to the
,
sugar beet crop."
