On leave all day (annual) REG 2-15-50 Wednesday, February 15, 1950

Meeting of Panel on dams uplift assumptions discussed. Sheer-friction and failure criterions also discussed. Puls suggests 4 for sheer friction. Zangar says this is a greater safety factor than may be present in concrete. Problem of getting field test data in in time to be of use in design is difficulties funds for preliminary irrigation are to small. Lacking this data the designs must grab something out of thin air (Raphael estimates $700,000 could have been saved on Shasta) REG 2-16-50

August 14 1950 (Monday)

Arrived in San Bernardino at 9:00 AM Standard time (10:00 local time). Were met by Cooper and taken to office at India. Took room at Buena Vista Court. Met Hales. Jones (Boulder City) stack De Alesandro Van Loo. Pete Terrell stayed in Office to compute resonance factors. Glover went to lateral 119.6 with Hale and Jones to observe action and collect data.

August 15 Tuesday

Hales, Jones, Terrell and Glover go out to lateral 119.64 to observe action of pipe with lids. Not so much accomplished because of difficulties due to flow changes to supply irrigators needs.

August 16, Wednesday

Hales, Jones, Terrell and Glover to go to field to collect data. Excellent cooperation of field crew. Kept flow conditions constant to provide as good opportunity for observations as possible under field conditions. Vacuum under lids measured. Test made with alternate stands copped. Air drive in field structures is relatively more important than the model.

Aug 15, 1950

Glover and Terrell made computations in the morning. In afternoon Hales, Jones, Glover, Terrell went to lateral 119.46 to try effect of lids and air vents. Air vents originally placed too high. Water supply cut off upstream. Trials not effective Herman and Johnson of Concrete Conduct Co showed up in field in the afternoon.

(10)

August 17, 1950 Thursday

Modifications of structures to suppress flow discussed among Hales, Jones, Terrell, Glover, D Allesandro and Van Loo. Train reservations for tomorrow (Friday) checked. Terrell will write letter. Field trip report will be written this evening. Hales, Jones, Terrell, and Glover went again to lateral 119.64. This was delivering 6.0 ft3/sec at sta 385+74. Flap on this stand was open at the box stand at sta 372 + 41, which was bumped of yesterday, this lid is holding vacuum. The vacuum gage

showed readings less than 1.0 but vacuum exists as shown by suction on the bubbler pipe. The turnout was opened slightly to see whether deliver could be made. It ran intermittently indirecting vacuums [?] than about 1.3 ft (Terrell). Saw stands with gates in the afternoon.

Temperature 115 degrees Fahrenheit today. No frostbite

Aug 18, 1950, Friday

Lid Construction discussed with hole in the morning (Jones, Terrell, Glover, D’Allesandro, Van Loo). Hale signed letter. Went to Colton with Jones. Vice President Herman showed Terrell and Glover the spinning and packerhead pipe construction methods and then took them to the Santa Fe Depot at San

Bernardino to catch the train. Terrell and Glover boarded the train at about 3:35 PM sta time for return trip to Denver.
