residential area in Malmö
became an eco-town
Malmö has transformed the Augustenborg district into an attractive eco-town with a modern ecological approach, very green spaces and its own production of renewable energy. When Malmö started rebuilding the Augustenborg district, the aim was to build an ecologically, socially and economically more sustainable area than previously. The area now has a unique system for ecological stormwater management, a more closed-loop cycle, new traffic solutions, green outdoor environments and a unique facility for green roofs.
The name given to the eco-town project was Ekostaden Augustenborg. Malmö applied for and received grants in two rounds from the Local Investment Programme (LIP) for several of the projects in Augustenborg.
PositiVE EnVironmEntaL anD Economic imPacts
• The consumption of district heating has decreased by 25 per cent. • Fossil energy has been replaced by renewable energy.
• Today 70 per cent of the food waste in the area goes to biogas production. • The green roofs attract birds and insects and have increased biodiversity in the area
by 50 per cent. The stormwater system too has created better environments for th local flora and fauna.
• Some measures that have proved profitable have been implemented since the project throughout the MKB property stock of 21 000 apartments in Malmö.
• The residents were highly active in the various projects. Voter turnout in Augustenborg rose during the project from 58 per cent in 1998 to 79 per cent in 2002, a unique increase in Malmö.

imPLEmEntation
Park and traffic environments were rebuilt during the project. The courtyards have been given more trees, shrubs and berry bushes, and more varied vegetation. Green roofs were installed on several buildings. Channels and ponds were built to collect rainwater.
Many measures were carried out during the project to reduce energy consumption. A system for waste separation was introduced for 1 600 apartments and for the area’s school. Augustenborg also tested the world’s first electric street train.
Most of the projects were implemented according to plan. However, recycling and the electric train did not produce the anticipated gains.
The Ekostaden Project was run cooperatively by the municipal housing company MKB and a number of municipal administrations. The residents in the area have participated very actively.
PotEntiaL anD fUtUrE BEnEfit
Creating sustainable cities is an important task. Many different types of good envi-ronmental solutions being developed within an urban district or residential area make it possible to develop integrated system solutions or other comprehensive solutions. We also gain more “shop windows” for Swedish environmental technology, in which many people and companies can be involved.

Augustenborg represents the largest individual investment in europe in an ecological switch for an exis-ting residential area. The project has now led to several other environmental projects that have been implemented without LIP funds. The stormwater system is an example of how cities can deal with increased precipitation, for example as a consequence of climate change. The project has shown that it is also possible to work on biodiversity in an urban environment. The product development for solar panels will be of great benefit to the whole country. The project has developed new methods for local people and organisations to assist in renewing an urban district.
