A County Without a County Agent

Is Badly Handicapped

''A

county agent is a farmer trained to serve his rural people as an apostle of the high ideals of living, as a teacher of the progressive principles of the business, the industry and the profession of farming, and as a promoter of what ever will make for the welfare of the individuals, com munities and state.'' This definition vvon a prize in North Carolina. (1Iolstein-Friesian World.)

Silo

Not a Case of Luck

(W. Livingston Larned)

When Bill cut ensilage and sicb, .And starting in his winter saving, His silo with its store was rich,

While other farmer folk were raving.

It never soured, nor gave out,

Just when the need for it was pressing.

IIis herd was healthy and about

When neighbors, 'With their own, were guessing.

"Luck," someone said, but Bill maintains 'Twas just a case of "takin' pains."

His profits on his milk were great,

Bill's bank account was sometbing stunning; And sales were made at top-notch rate,

Folks said it was "that fellow's cunning." Each day his trucks went into town,

So burdened with milk, tbey grunted, While others looked on with a frown

And found their little loads were stunted. ''Just luck," said Brown, "a gambler's gains."

Bill smiled and answered: "Takin' pains."

Spring came--Bill's crops were extra fine; liis pasturage was bright and sunny. No grumbling at the wet or shine,

lie kept on making lots of money.

His tractors never died from rust,

His herd was health from top to bottom, And when new stunts came labeled, "Must,"

lie spent his money and be got 'erA. "Luck," whined the bunch, "it holds th' reins."

But we know it wa:,; "takin' pains."
