environmentally friendly school
built of reclaimed brick in Alingsås
The Alströmergymnasiet upper secondary school has been rebuilt with 156 000 bricks from the old brewery in Alingsås. At the same time, the school was equipped with environ-mental adaptations that save the Municipality 800 MWh of energy annually. The Municipality of Alingsås has invested in both solar panels and heat recovery to reduce the school’s energy costs. It has also been provided with facilities for waste separation and composting in order to increase the level of recycling. As an added bonus the building, which is of interest from the point of view of environmental tech-nology, is used in actual teaching. The project is a good example of consistent environ-mental work, in addition to obvious environenviron-mental gains, also leading to reduced costs of heating, electricity, water and waste. The project started in 1998 with support from the Local Investment Programme (LIP).
PositiVE EnVironmEntaL anD Economic imPacts
• Environmental adaptations in the action signified an energy saving and efficiency improvement of 800 MWh/year.
• Energy savings at the manufacturing stage of 900 MWh. • 123 doors and 31 windows were re-used in the project. • Four new waste separation centres have been created.

imPLEmEntation
Recycled building material from the old brewery in Alingsås was largely used in the reconstruction of the Alströmer school. In the Science and Technology building, recovered brick has been laid with lime mortar so that it can be dismantled, cleaned and re-used once more.
Solar panels were installed, heat recovery was introduced and centres for waste separation and composting were built.
Computerised control of heating and ventilation and heat recovery from exhaust air have been introduced in the rebuilt school. Consumption of electricity has been reduced by occupancy-controlled lighting and the fact that the lighting is controlled by light relays in the corridors. Advanced technical solutions have reduced the con-sumption of both electricity and heating. Stormwater tanks with an open bottom for infiltration of rainwater directly into the soil were also installed.

Creating sustainable cities is an important task. The fact that many different types of good environmental solutions are developed in large public buildings such as schools, hospitals and commercial centres makes it possible to develop integrated system solu-tions and other comprehensive solusolu-tions. We also gain “shop windows” for Swedish environmental technology, in which many people and companies can be involved.

The programme has entailed several large environmental improvements that would not otherwise have come about. As well as the obvious environmental gains, the project shows that consistent environmental work also leads to decreased costs of heating, electricity, water and waste. The work has also resulted in very good cooperation between the municipality, businesses, stakeholder organisations and landowners, which is judged to be of great value to future work on nature and environmental conservation.
