Biographical Data Lyman H. Andrews

Born on a farm at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, November 20, 1896. Moved to a farm near Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1898, then to Western Kansas in 1905 and from there to a farm near Greeley, Colorado, in 1907, where I had my first experience thinning beets on my father's farm. In 1913 we moved to Morrill, Nebraska, where my father farmed and was employed as a fieldman by The Great Western Sugar Company.

Following graduation from Morrill High School in 1914, I entered the University of Nebraska from which I graduated in 1918. I then enlisted in the Navy and was released from overseas duty as Communications Officer in September 1919.

I was employed by The Great Western Sugar Company in October 1919. My service with The Great. Western Sugar Company has included work as a fieldman

at Scottsbluff, Assistant to Nebraska District Manager at Scottsbluff until appointed Manager at the Lyman, Nebraska, factory from 1929 until 1936. I

served as Manager at Sterling, Colorado, from 1936 to 1939 and managed the Greeley and Eaton, Colorado, factories from 1939 to 1943 when I was appointed Manager at Billings, Montana, serving there until 1948.

In July 1948 I came to Denver as Assistant Vice President. In 1949 I · was appointed Northern District Manager in which capacity I served until September .

upon Mr. McMaster's promotion to Manager of the Nebraska district. is a true

Born in 1896 a.t Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Mr. Andrews spent part

ot

his

childhood in Kansas, and had the distinction of entering Colorado in true

pioneer

fashion w:1. th his parents in a covered wagon. The family located. in 190'1. near

Ydndsor and in 1908 began tarm.ing near La Salle in the Greeley district. Young

Andrews took eagerly to farm life and decided to make it his vocation. He

studied agriculture at the University of Nebraska e.nd was graduated with the

class of 19181 receiving his degree while in the Navy, in which he had enl.isted

in December, 1917. He served 22 months, during which he me.de eight trips to

France as communication officer on a troop transport.

Following his discharge from the Navy with a commission of Ensign,

Mr. Andrews entered Great '\'.estern employment at Scottsbluff I Nebr.• in the fall

of

1919. During his next ten years he served as Fieldman and in a general capacity

as assistant to the Nebraska District Manager. In July, 19291 Mr • .Andrews was

appointed Manager 0£ the Lyman, Nebr. , factory, which position he he 1d until his

appointment as Manager at Sterling July 14, 1936. He was transferred to Greeley

as Greeley-Eaton Manager August 2, 1939, from which post he now comes to Billings.

Mr. Andre\Vs was married to Uiss Patricia Yorke of New York in New York

in 1934. They have two children, Lyman,, Jr.,, 5 years old, and Diana,

Mr. Andrews has distinguished himself in agricultural research work. He

has written and lectured authoritatively on agricultural subjects1 is an excellent

photographer,, thoroughly understands crops and f'eeding and has had special

exper-ience in recruiting and handlillF of labor. In his recent work a:t Greeley he has

contributed to important developments

in

nechanization

or

beet produotion. The

new Billings Manager has a winning personality and has taken an active part in

civic and business activities in the communities where he has lived. He is a

His appointment as Manager of the Eaton and Greeley factories is in the nature of a home-coming for Lyman

H.

Andrews. His earliest farm

ex-perience was in the Gree1ey-Windsor area.

Born in 1996 at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Mr. Andrews spent part of his childhood in Kansas, and had the distinction of entering Colorado in true pioneer fashion, with his parents in a covered wagon. The family located

1907 near Farmers' Spur in the Windsor district where young Andrews worked in

his father's beet fields. In 1908 the family farmed in the Greeley district

southeast of La Salle.

graduated with the class of 1918, receiving his degree while in the Navy in

which he enlisted in December, 1917.· He served 22 months, part of which was

overseas.

Following his discharge from the service, with the conmission of Ensign,

he entered employment of The Great Western Sugar Company at Scottsbluff,

Ne-braska, in the fall of 1919. During his next ten years in Nebraska he served

as Fieldman and in a general capacity as assistant to the Nebraska Distriet

Manager. In J'uly, 1929, Mr. Andrews was appointed Manager

of

the

Lyman

Nebraska, factory, which position he held until his appointment as Manager

at Sterling J'uly 14, 1936.

Mr. Andrews was married to Miss Patricia Yorke of New York in New York in 1934. They have two children, Lyman, Jr., born April 2, 1937 • and Diana,

born July 26, 1939.

Mr. Andrews has distinguished himself in agricultural research work,

He is an authoritative writer on agricultural subjects, is an excellent

photo-grapher, and is respqmsible for many of the unusual underground photographs of beet root systems widely published in recent years.

· He beli.,.ves in building the be"lt crop "from underground up" and

ad-vocates early and thorough seed bed preparation as the fir~ step in securing

a good stand of sugar beets. ./'
