EU DSO Entity appoints Secretary General

The EU DSO Entity, the European Association representing the European Distribution System Operators (DSO), has appointed Peter Vermaat as Secretary General. Peter is already performing work for the EU DSO Entity and will officially start his mandate as of 1 October.

“We are excited that Peter will join the organization at this crucial time for our industry which is facing an in-depth transformation of the energy sector and, as such, the whole society” said Vincenzo Ranieri, EU DSO President. “With Peter’s background and expertise as a former CEO of a Dutch DSO company, I am confident that he will be able to strengthen the role and the visibility of the DSOs in the European Union and the role they can play in contributing to a fully decarbonized European society by 2050”, he continued.

Peter Vermaat adds: “I am very enthusiastic to take up this role since I see the EU DSO Entity as an important platform to facilitate the energy transition by continuously enhancing the important role of DSOs in a changing energy landscape.”

The President also thanked Hans Craen, who acted as Interim Secretary General, for his work over the past months. For the coming weeks, he will continue to work alongside Peter Vermaat to ensure an effective and efficient transitioning.

The EU DSO Entity has been formally set up in June 2021 and aims to increase efficiencies in the electricity distribution networks in the European Union and to ensure close cooperation with Transmission System Operators and ENTSO-E. As such, the organization will take up a key role in the development and completion of the internal electricity market. It will act as a platform of cooperation between all the electricity DSOs with the overall objective of positioning itself as an expert body tackling essential matters such as developing network codes & guidelines, contributing to the digitalisation of the DSO systems and facilitating the integration of Renewable Energy Sources. The EU DSO Entity already gathers more than 900 DSOs of small, medium and large size in an active cooperation mindset.

Peter Vermaat will focus, in a first phase, on the operational side of the organization while also ensuring that the Entity’s voice is heard in the on-going processes for developing network codes on, among other topics, demand side flexibility, data interoperability and cybersecurity.
