josé antónio nhavoto was born in Maputo, Mozambique. He is a PhD-student in Informatics at Örebro University, Sweden. He holds an MSc in Information Systems from Oslo University, Norway and has been teaching subjects in Computer Science (currently on study leave) in Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique for the past 10 years. His current research interests are information systems including e-services, eHealth, mHealth and e-Learning.

Mobile technologies have demonstrated the potential to improve health service delivery in many countries. An important challenge is the integration of a mo-bile technology-based system with routine healthcare services and existing IT systems, as well as developing a scalable technical structure. The thesis uses a design science methodological approach and mixes qualitative and quantitative methods to design, develop, implement and evaluate a mobile technology-based system, called SMSaúde, with the aim of improving the care of patients with HIV/AIDS and TB in Mozambique. The findings are presented in five papers. The major contributions of this thesis are the SMSaúde artefact which has been in use since 2013 in more than 16 healthcare clinics as well as improved healthcare practices. The thesis also makes a contribution to research by demon-strating how information systems artefacts can be constructed and successfully implemented in resource-constrained settings.
