ÖREBRO STUDIES IN CaRE SCIENCES 38Maria Hälleberg Nyman has been a registered
nurse since 1991. She is employed at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Örebro University Hospital, Sweden. Between 2004 and 2009 she combined her nursing employment with working as a clinical adjunct lecturer. Her interest in research was sparked when she conducted her Bachelor of Science project in 2006. In 2009 she received her Master of Science and was registered as a doctoral student at the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Örebro University.
The present thesis highlights different issues associated with urinary catheterisation in connection to hip surgery. The author uses both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Urinary catheterisation is a nursing intervention. It is important that the nurse perform the insertion and management of the urinary catheter according to the best available evidence. For parts of the urinary catheter management, there is a need for further studies to fill knowledge gaps. The studies in this thesis comprise some of the areas where knowledge is lacking: risk factors and consequences of nosocomial UTI, the effect of catheter clamping on return to normal urinary function, whether intermittent or indwelling catheterisation is the best choice for the patient, and the patients’ experiences of urinary catheterisation.
