THE MOTORCYCLE MILK BAR

CITY MAP 1:20000

The ban on Hookah Bars can be seen as an outcome of the conservative policy by the city of Ahmedabad. There are many taboos sur- rounding encounters between young adults, especially those who are unmarried. So I decided to compensate and take further the

function of the Hookah bars, acting as places of seclusion for young adults to intermingle.

I started my project by a scheme consisting of two parts: One is extrovert and corresponds to the city, this one I call POP. The other takes focuses on generating a community and is

more introvert, this one goes by the name Niche. The main idea of the project is that POP and Niche comes together into a place.

At this stage it is called The Motorcycle Milk Bar. It will respond to the broad public, while the focus will be on creating a place for these

user groups. It will incorporate spaces that allow for seclusion, from the public, but also have spaces that are on expose for the public.

The intermingled program is developed from two user scenarios.

PROGRAM

The intermingled program is developed from two user sce- narios. The first scenario is about this young adult that likes to go around the city in his spare time, meeting his partner and friends. Most of these public places serve as a retreat.

They offer intimacy and seclusion, and often have romantic qualities. Marked on the map are such places. These can be parks, lakes, museums or Ellis BridgePart of my strategy is that the Motorcycle Milk Bar will either be a part in this net- work of places, or an instance in this kind of scenario. And the two wheelers will be taken in account for in the design. The second scenario focuses on a foreign student that dwells at the site. Sleep, eat, study, dance, and work at the café. My strategy for this scenario is to find activities that can share the same space, either periodically in separation or sporadically intermixed or vice versa.

CONCEPT & USERS

The POP part can best be described as a program that is in direct communication with the city. It can be a POP UP, a POP BY or something POPING OUT.

The user group is mainly focused on young adults, who mostly, like many others, transports themselves on two wheelers. Other users will be ‘the many oth- ers’ who might fancy a small break, a snack, a soda,

or just a pop. YOUNG

ADULTS

The Niche part is focused on housing for foreign ex- change students. They will suite well within the pro- gram, from which, they will also benefit and enrich.

In contrast to POP, The Niche program starts off with private spaces. These will in groups share col- lective facilities such as kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms. All together they will share common ar-

eas, either practical or social. EXCHANGE
