SF(A)I Revolution

The SF(A)I Revolution

The Problem

Sana Labs is an artificial intelli- gence company, founded in 2016, with the mission to make educa- tion together with machine lear- ning adaptable to every student’s unique learning patterns.

AI has not yet been applied to one of the world’s largest and most important indu- stries - education.

The Partnership

Knowledge of the host-country

language is a key factor in determining the speed and success of integration –

both economic and social.

- Joel Hellermark, Founder & CEO

The Outcome

The prototype predicts that a reconsidered governance

system could greatly benefit SFI impact. Our suggestion is there- fore to prioritize an integration policy incentivizing education over work, thus reducing long-term costs.

Considering the different variable impacting the effectiveness of implementing AI, we con- cluded that the optimal alternative would be to

focus on path 2 and 3. This is because of both their receptiveness to such a tool as well as the large economic benefits gained from their ensuing stable employment.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS THE WAY FORWARD

INCREASE OUR POTENTIAL IMPACT

Improving the quality and availability of SFI education helps

reducing socital inequalities.

By enabling a greater portion of socie- ty to enter the workforce would improve productivity, economic growth and reduce unemployment.

Reducing societal exclusion of immig- rants through language barriers facili-

tates a sustainable migration.

Integrating AI into SFI in cooperation with Sana Labs enables a multi-sta- keholder partnership for an improved

integration in Sweden.

SNAE has emphazised the need for per- sonalization in SFI - so we partnered up with experts in personalization.

4. A Pilot Project

Building on our work, Sana Labs has partnered up with Irisgruppen to set up a pilot program with 40 SFI students this fall. From this, further insights will be obtained which can allow further development and expansion.

Through the insights we gained during roughly 60 interviews with students, teach- ers and experts we constructed 6 profiles encompassing the majority of SFI students.

These profiles will in turn be used in formu- lating Sana Labs strategy when conducting their pilot in the fall of 2019.

2. Measuring Impact

Sweden currently faces a huge problem with its integration of immigrants, particular engaging

them in the labor market. The foreign born unemployment rate currently lies at 16%. One of the largest barriers to integration is language pro-

fiency - the immigrants need to learn Swedish.

Integration Swedish For Immigrants

Swedish For Immigrants (SFI) is a qualified language education run by the Swedish National Agency for

Education (SNAE), with the purpose to give adult immigrants basic knowledge in the Swedish langua- ge. At enrollment, the students receive a quality edu-

cation corresponding to their abilities and needs.
