UW ACT Student Opinion Survey 2004

11

UNIVERSITY

OF

WYOMING A.C.T. SURVEY,

2004

In the spring of 2004, the Dean of Arts

&

Sciences (A&S) at the University of Wyoming

commissioned the Survey Research Center (SRC) for data entry and analysis on a two-part survey

of student opinions at UW. This document presents the results from the part of the survey

containing questions that were also asked nationwide by American College Testing (ACT).

METHODS

The questionnaire, designed by ACT, has been used at UW in the spring of even-numbered

years for some time. The SRC played no role in questionnaire design, but in 2004 for the first time

did assist the A&S Dean's office with the logistics of survey administration. Respondents were

those students agreeing to participate, from a sampling of spring semester classes taught at 10 AM

on Wednesdays, plus additional classes in the Outreach School. All students in attendance on that

day received two questionnaires, including a survey specific to UW and either the ACT or another

national form. During May and June, 2004, SRC personnel entered the data from the ACT

questionnaires using specialized software for that purpose and procedures for quality control. There

were 7 54 respondents from the Laramie campus, and 93 Outreach respondents. Simple random

samples would yield margins of error of about 3.7 and 10.4 percentage points, respectively, with

95o/o confidence. However, the cluster design used (sampling entire classes) produces larger

margins of error that cannot be precisely calculated from the information available to the SRC.

SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS

The accompanying graphs summarize some of the findings for Laramie campus students.

The 2002 respondents had included a higher proportion of male students than in the

1998 or 2000 surveys. This year the distribution is more nearly even, but with males

still outnumbering females

.

As before, respondents are overwhelmingly Caucasian.

The age distribution of Laramie campus students had been shifting in the direction of

younger students in the previous four years. This trend was broken

in

2004, perhaps

because a sharply higher percentage of respondents were seniors and fewer were first

or second year students. This is more likely to reflect the mix of classes sampled

than any fundamental shift in campus demographics.

Although the proportion of students in the 23-25 age group is slightly up from 2002,

the 26-39 age group is down. By contrast, close to two-thirds of Outreach students

(results not graphed) are older than 29.

There are so1ne notable changes in student satisfaction levels. Satisfaction with

library services has decreased, and satisfaction with computer services, residence

halls and food services has increased. The increase in satisfaction with food services

is most pronounced at 20%.

Some key findings not shown in graphs for the Laramie campus respondents follow.

Parking issues have generated much discussion on campus of

late

,

and the

survey

results provide an interesting perspective. There has been a slight but steady

increase in satisfaction with parking facilities and services since 2000, though 78o/o

of respondents

still

report being dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. Notably, however,

the proportion saying that they have not used parking at all nearly doubled over the

four years, to almost 17%. Meanwhile, the proportion using college mass transit

services rose from less than 12% to 30o/o, and satisfaction with mass transit services

rose to more than 71% who are either satisfied or very satisfied. The impact of

changes in the UW bus system is clearly evident.

Although on most items more than half of the students are satisfied, there is a trend

\

toward decreasing levels of

satisfaction

about the following items. Combining the

\.\ satisfied and the very satisfied, a

consiste~tl

y

decr~asing

level of

satisfact~on

since

\ (I

program (with only

36o/o satisfied),

the flexibility to design their own program of

\j'

·

study, and the billing and fee payment procedures. Although there is some recovery

since 2002, the satisfaction with the college orientation program is still very much

below the level of

2000.

And since

2002

there is a substantial decrease in

satisfaction with library

services,

and with residence hall rules and regulations.

On the following items satisfaction has remained consistently under 50%

since 2000:

job placement services, the student health insurance program, parking facilities,

student voice in college policies, rules governing student conduct at the college,

residence halls rule and regulations, academic probation and suspension policies,

purpose for

which

student activity fees are used, availability of student housing,

opportunities for student employment, student government, religious activities and

programs.

Overall satisfaction has increased on a number of items. This is true for residence

hall services and programs, food services, college sponsored social activities (with a

very notable increase in the percentage of the very satisfied since 2002), credit by

examination, the university's concern with students as individuals, and computer

services (with another very notable increase in the percentage of the very satisfied).

Very substantial is the increase in sati

.

sfaction since

2002

with college mass transit

services-21 points in overall satisfaction and 1 7 points in the percent of the

"Very

satisfied." Satisfaction with the student union has increased, and also with the

bookstore that is housed in the recently renovated union building.

On a number of items although no substantial change in satisfaction is observed

overall, there is

a

notable increase in the percentage of those who reported being

"Very

satisfied." On recreational and intramural programs and services there is an

increase in the percentage of the

"Very

satisfied" of 10 points since 2000 and 6

points since

2002.

A similar change is observed in the satisfaction with the

college-sponsored tutorial services, financial aid services, student employment services,

cultural programs, the college orientation program, the variety of course offered by

the college, the class size relative to the type of course, the preparation students are

receiving for their future occupation, admissions publications, personal security and

safety at the college, laboratory facilities, study areas, the general registration

procedures, the availability of courses they want at the times they want to take them,

the attitude of college non-teaching staff toward students, racial harmony at this

college, the opportunities for personal involvement in campus activities, and finally

with the college in general.

ORGANIZATION OF THIS REPORT

This introductory section concludes with the graphs just discussed. Part One of this report

,

which follows, provides the complete question wording

,

response frequencies and percentages for

every item in the survey, for all Laramie campus respondents. (Results are presented for the 2004

survey and, for comparison

,

the

2

000 and 2002 surveys as well.)

Part Two shows the 2004 Laramie campus results separately by respondent's college.

Grouping of respondents into colleges was accomplished using the respondents

'

self-reported major

field, since college as such was not reported. Part Three provides response frequencies and

percentages for Outreach students from the 2004 side by side with results for Laramie campus for

2004. The final part of this report provides the full text of all written comments
