ternational level including organisational develop

ment and establish ment of business operations and institutions. His main academic work circles around quality management from the perspective of the customer and other stakeholders. He founded SSE Russia in 1997 and served as its Dean until 2006.

Anders Liljenberg is an associate professor in SSE and served as the Dean of SSE Russia between 2006 and 2018. Prior to rejoining academia in 1995 he spent a few years in the travel and phar

maceutical industries. Since 2003 he serves as an adviser to the Stockholm District Court in market law and antitrust cases. His research interest is in the area of market functionality. He is a vivid skier.

This is our subjective story about Stockholm School of Economics Russia during the twenty years elapsing from its opening in Saint-Petersburg 1997.

Our joint experience of operating the Russian branch of Stockholm School of Economics (Handelshögskolan i Stockholm) hosts a story too good not to be told. The first part is a case story where the school’s activities are illuminated by the two of us serving as Deans. The second part can be looked upon as our effort to understand those years by means of some analytical tools. In the final part, we have included some basic statistics about courses, participants, faculty, and a summary of a few financial aspects. This book is intended for all those entertaining a special interest for higher education, in general, and the Russian relations, in particular. It is more generally about establishing busi- ness activities as greenfield projects or partnerships in new environments. It is our sincere belief and aspiration that we all could learn something from it.

1991, a social experiment with few modern equals came to an end through the demise of the Soviet Union. The 70-year rule of the communist party, KPSS, left be- hind a legacy with many facets, one of which is homo sovieticus whose navigating in the Russian economy ever since comes for- ward. It constitutes the backbone against which this story is told.
