Notes on Hymenoptern

3. Contribution to the knowledge of the distribution of Swedish aculeate hymenoptera. I

By

StnlreN EnLANDssoN

Among Swedish entomologists the interest in the hvmenopteras is infinite- simal in comparision wilh other groups of insects like beetles and butterflies.

The consequense is lhat our knor.ledge of the distribution of these insects

is prettv defective. In a list of the aculeate hymenoptera and the chrysids captured in the Baltic islands (Oland, Gotland, Fardn and Gotska Sandiinl Jansson i1934) also mentioned their distribution in the remaining part of Sweden. But the mentioned insects are only part of the species of lhe countr)-.

The cause for this scanty interest may inter alia be due to the absence of native literature concerning these insects. During the years 1903-18 .{uri- villius published a fauna of the Swedish aculeate hymenoptera. Since then there are no new books published with the exception of a second reprint of Fam. Psammociaridae (edited 1929 by O. Lundblad and .A.. Roman). llost of the books are more or less out of date and some of them are also out

of print.

During my work with the Swedish apids my interest has been awakened in other groups of aculeale hymenoptera and a lot of specimens have been captured. In lhis journal I am going to comunnicate on the one hand my own finds and on the other finds from collections belonging to the depart- ment of the Srvedish Museum of Natural Historl- (Stockholm). These collec- tions were brought together by Dr. A. Roman (t), Lic. G. Hedgren {f), Dr. S.

Selander (t), Prof. O. Lundblad, Keeper E. Kjellander and Dr. G. Wiingsjti.

For my own collection I have received specimens caplured by Demonstralor K. J. Hedquist. But it contains not only rare or smaller common species but also common ones. We know for a fact that it is easier to drarv a map of distribution of a rare species than of a common one.

In this paper I begin with the following Families viz. Sopgg1idae, Scoliidae.

Tiphidue, Methocithe, )Igrmosidae, ilutillidae ar.d. Eunenidqe (the solitary wasps). I have already used my collections in two small papers, the Srvedish species if the genus Eumenes (Erlandsson 1950) and Philanthus triongulum

F. (Ertandsson 1962). Some specimens of my collections were captured in the summer of 1958 rvhen I made investigations of apids in Southern Sweden bv means of a grant from the Council of Natural Science.

- In Selander's collection lhere is a male of this species captured in Ljugarn (Gotland) on the 25th Jult 1933. .{nder (10,17) has giren details about the distribution of S. Ili.I( in Scandinavia. Concerning its occurence in Srveden he says

as folloE's: "Some nerv finds are not noted before 1938 in the reriew 'Sveriges Nature', there is some manl'words the occurence of Scolid unil(sci(lo C1'ril is an- nounced \rithin the prolince of Gotland, rvhich presupposcd that it has been dis

covered rvithin the terrilorl'" (-{nder l.s.). While Selander \_as the presidenl of the Sr{edish Society for Conservation of \ature during lhe )-ears 1936-19{7 I supposed

that Selander's find s'as the cause for the proclaiming of Scolio iirlo in Gotland.

Forestrl' officer, U. lYeinberg, lhe secretarl of the societl' mentioned above, has communicated that mt h)'pothesis s'as lrue. fhe request of proclaiming Selander's

find at l-jugarn r-as adduced as the cause for thc petition.

Selander has determined this male to S<'olia unilasciala Crril. .{n cxaminalion shorvs that there are rvhole 5'ellon'zones on the 2nd and 3rd tergits \vhich is characteristic of the principal form and coincide as to the colour {'ith specimens

shich I have captured in Spain, Ital)' and Yugoslavia. The name of this male is Scolie hirta Schrk. The male of the variet]' rr[i/osci.rla has a l"ellorv zone onl!' in the 3rd ter8it. This find of Sc. fiirla in Golland is the first one although it has onll- no$ been published.

There is another find of Sc. ftirtc in Golland. Keeper E. Kjellauder has communi- cated lhat in the summcr of 1954 he sa\r a specimen in K1'llej. Up to norv all kno\\'n finds of Sc. ftirtd in Gotland are from the east coast of the island.
