Kristian Kristiansen, professor i arkeologi vid Göteborgs Universitet, efterträddes på pos- ten som EAA:s ordförande av Willem Willems, Hollands riksantikvarie. Willems hade dittills i flera år beklätt posten som EAA:s sekreterare.
I detta ögonblick gavs ett karakteristiskt exem- pel på den informella stämning som präglar EAA-kongresserna. Ordförandeposten över- lämnades symboliskt med en hoprullad kon- gressaffisch föreställande ett utsnitt ur den bo- husländska hällristningen Tanum Raä 614.
Den oklanderligt propre ä m b e t s m a n n e n Wil- lems tackade Kristiansen och sade, m e d a n han inför sittande årsmöte med drygt 100 deltaga- re rullade ut affischen, ungefär följande: »Det är passande att ordförandeskapet (eng. presi- dency) överlämnas med d e n n a bild av en an- nan president, nämligen Förenta Staternas.»
Mitt på affischen syntes, i övernaturlig storlek g e n t e m o t omgivande figurer, en fallisk lurblå- sare! Arme Clinton!
Kongressens sista dag var vigd åt exkursio- ner. Folk skockades mest kring bussarna till Tanum med dess u n d e r b a r a hällristningar.
Själv passade j a g i stället på att med kunniga exkursionsledares hjälp bekanta mig med j ä r n å l d e r n och medeltiden i Göta Älvs dal-
gång samt trakten kring Halleberg och Hun- neberg. Vi gjorde s p ä n n a n d e besök bland an- nat på den välundersökta romarlida skatt- fyndplatsen vid Vittene och det utmärkta nya museet i Lödöse.
I jämförelse med EAA-kongresserna i Riga och Ravenna (se Fornvännen 1996:3 och
1997:3-4) placerar sig Göteborgskongressen som helhet sedd avgjort som n u m m e r ett. Or- ganisatörerna från arkeologiska institutionen vid stadens universitet förtjänar en stor eloge - de hade faktiskt lyckats med allt utom valet av hmchrestaurang!
EAA-kongresserna är upplagda för att möj- liggöra intensivt professionellt, vetenskapligt och socialt utbyte mellan europeiska arkeolo- ger från Ural till Portugal och från Island till Israel. I alla dessa tre avseenden lyckades man särskilt väl i Göteborg 1998. 1999 års kongress äger rum i B o u r n e m o u t h på Englands sydkust och man efterlyser redan seminarieorganisatö- rer och talare. Säkert k o m m e r man i Bourne- mouth att sträva efter att följa och kanske över- träffa Göteborgskongressens utmärkte exem- pel.

The EAA principles of conduet for archaeologists involved in contract archaeological work
At ils Annual Business Meeting in Göteborg on 26 September 1998, the membership of the EAA voted to approve and adopt a set of "Prin- ciples of conduet for archaeologists involved in contract archaeological work". These had been prepared by the EAA's Working Party on Commercial Archaeology, were aired at the Ravenna meeting in 1997 and were published
in draft in The European Archaeologist No. 8 (Winter 1997). T h e draft principles were fur- ther discussed at a well-attended and lively round-table held at the Göteborg meeting.
T h e text which was approved by the mem- bership is reproduced below. T h e Principles of Conduet now sit beside the EAA Code of Prac- tice which was approved at Ravenna, and help Fornvännen 94 (1999)

Principles of conduet for archaeologists involved in contracl arcbaeological work
Note: many of these principles apply equally to all kinds of archaeological work, bni ihis code deals es- pecially with issues arising from a contract system of funding.
1. Archaeologists should ensure that they under- stand, and operate within, the legal framework within which the regulation of archaeological work takes place in that country.
2. j\rchaeologists should ensure that they give the best possible advice lo d e v d o p e r s and planners, and should not advise on matters beyond their knowledge or conipetcnce.
3. Archaeologists should ensure that they under- ställd the structure of archaeological roles and responsibililies, the relationships between these roles and their place in this structure.
4. Archaeologisls should avoid conflictl ol interesl between lhe role ol giving advice in a regnlalory capacity and undertaking (or offering to under- take) work in a contract capacity.
5. Archaeologists should not offer to undertake contract work for which they or their organisa- tions are not suitably equipped, stalled or expe- rienced.
6. Archaeologists should inaintain adequate pro- ject control systems (académie, linancial, qual- ity, lime) in relation to lhe work which they are undertaking.
7. Archaeologists should adhere to recognised pro- fessional standards for archaeological work.
8. Archaeologists should adhere both to the rele- vant law and to ethical standards in the area of competition between archaeological organisa- tions.
9. Archaeologists involved in contract archaeologi- cal work should ensure that the results of such work are properly completed and made publidy available.
10. Archaeologists involved in contract archaeolo- gical work should ensure that archaeological in- formation is not snppressed unreasonably or in- d d i n i t d y (by d e v d o p e r s or by archaeological organisations) for commercial reasons.
11. Archaeologisls involved in contract archaeolo- gical work should be conscious of the need to inainiain the académie coherence of archae- ology, in the face of a tendency towards frag- mentation u n d e r a contract system of organisa- tion.
12. Archaeologists involved in managing contract archaeological work should be conscious of their responsibililies towards the pay, conditions of employment and training and career deve- lopment opportunities of archaeologists, in re- lation to lhe effects of competition between archaeological organisations on these aspects of life.
13. Archaeologisls involved in contracl archaeolo- gical work should recognise the need lo d e m o n - siraie, to d e v d o p e r s and to the public al large, the benefits of support for archaeologica] work 14. Where contract archaeology exists, all archae- ologists (especially in positions of inlluence) should promote the application of this code, and promote development of the means to make it work effectively, especially adequate sys- tems of regulation.

how the EAA can function effectively and de- mocratically to develop polides for archae- ology at a European level. T h e formation of the Working Party was decided on at the An- nual Meeting in Santiago de Compostela in 1995. T h e Working Party included represent- atives of five different countries, a n d sought information and views from colleagues in many others. T h e draft Principles were dis- cussed at Ravenna, published in TEA and com- ments sought (and received—see TEA 9), and discussed again (and a m e n d e d ) at Göteborg.
At the e n d of this process, they were approved by a vote of members in the Annual Business Meeting.
In many ways, the adoption of lhe Principles marks the beginning of a process, as much as the e n d of one. Now, we need to make the Principles work in practice, in the widdy vary- ing archaeological situations found across Europé. T h e r e are clear links to a n u m b e r of other issues—training, professional organisa- tions, quality m a n a g e m e n t in rescue archae-
ology—that were also discussed at Göteborg.
T h e Commercial Archaeology Working Party will continue to monitor d e v d o p m e n t s in rela- tion to the Principles, and will work with others to ensure that Principles are t u r n e d in- to practice to the fullest possible e x t e n t

Utställning om höggotisk konst i Paris
I Paris stora utställningskomplex Grand Palais visades u n d e r våren 1998 en magnifik utställ- ning om gotisk konst u n d e r d e c e n n i e r n a kring år 1300, som det finns all anledning att uppmärksamma. Dess i förstone något märkli- ga titel var L'art au temps des rois maudits, dvs. »Konsten u n d e r de förbannade kungar- nas tid». Titeln syftar på en en period i fransk historia som fått sin belysning bland annat i en romansvit av Maurice Druon, uppskattad och spridd inte bara i Frankrike: »Les rois mau- dits» (på svenska som »Tornet och elden»
samt »Kronan och arvet»). Den handlar om de turbulenta decennierna kring år 1300, Filip den skönes och hans söners tid. O m Filips tid säger D r u o n i sitt förord till sviten: »Under hans regeringstid var Frankrike mäktigt och fransmännen olyckliga.»
Filip IV, »den sköne», var, epitetet till trots,
en hårdför regent som starkt arbetade för att stärka kungamakten, både i Frankrike och gentemot p å v e d ö m e t I sin kamp mot kyrkan blev Filip bannlyst av Bonifatius VIII m e n lät 1303 g e n o m sin kansler Nogaret ta påven till fånga i hans sommarresidens i Anagni. Påven befriades av folket men dog strax därefter. Nå- gra år senare, 1309, säkrade Filip kontrollen över påvemakten g e n o m att flytta den heliga stolen till Avignon.
En a n n a n av Filips motståndare var Tempel- h e r r e o r d e n , som på 1100-talet grundats för att trygga säkerheten för pilgrimerna till Jerusa- lem. T e m p e l h e r r a r n a fick så småningom en avsevärd makt i Europa, särskilt i Frankrike, där de hade hade stora egendomar. Filip an- klagade t e m p e l h e r r a r n a för kätteri och lät 1314 b r ä n n a ordens stormästare Jaques de Molay på bål. Enligt legenden - och säkert är Fornvännen 94(1999)
