paul pettersson-pablo is a specialist physician of Clinical Biochemistry in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, at Örebro University Hospital. The PhD studies that form the basis of this thesis started in 2017 at the School of Medical Sciences, Örebro University. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Sweden, as well as globally. The dominant cause of CVD is atherosclerosis, a vascular disease involving inflammation and fatty deposits in vessel walls. It progresses slowly, usually requiring decades until the atherosclerotic process has advanced to the point where symptomatic disease manifests. An altered vascular function and structure is an early sign of vascular disease that often precedes symptomatic CVD. These vascular properties can be examined using physiological measurements.
In this thesis, serum and plasma biomarkers and their relationship with vascular function and structure measurements have been studied to examine the biochemical properties of the early stages of vascular disease.
