Density of the City

Network of Roads

Street as Urban Livingroom

When looking at a map of the city the density of buildings and people is highly present. All dwellings in the old town is of terrace type, and has no private space around the own property.

When removing all built form, left is a network of narrow and randomly grown roads. A route in the city gives you a diver- sity of experience through a wide range of

Derriving from Karin Frykholms mapping, this in between space functions as the neighborhod living room where kids and families meet to socialize.

The density and variation of program could create a kind of ”library city” where communication and me- etings occur in the space in between, just like in the city streets of

Ahmedabad.

During the case study in Ahmedabad I noticed the huge amount of children playing around in the streets of the Old town, and their great curiosity for foreign culture and language was highly present. Some of them had the opportunity to go to school, while some didn’t. In general in India 28 % of the people over 15 can’t read or write, but during the last 15 years the number has decreased from 21% to 11% in the City of Ahmedabad. Literacy is a key for socio-economic pro- gress and the ones who doesn’t understand their environment gets a hard time to cooperate, which affects democracy and society in large. My proposal is a Kids Library with primary focus on children in the age of 2-16 years from all social classes. The project will encourage language development where spaces will be adapted to the children’s current stage of learning ability. The project aspi- res to be a cultural platform where ideas and knowledge are accessed through multiple of medias such as literacy, computers, film, games, small workshops etc. This in an aim to offer different ways of learning and receiving information that could be adoptive for a wider range of individuals.

Grown ups would also be able to use the buil- ding during evenings for locally based events.

The building would integrate the community by offering a public scene, where public lectures and film screenings would take place which encourage to generate cultural spread in Ahmedabad in general. Secondary users would also be the café guests using the small journal café with international newspapers

Shown in the mapping the street of Ah- medabad becomes the playing area for the kids. The intention is to invite the street to under the building and open up a small space for play and gathering.

The idea is that the library would be lifted up from the ground. Both to create a safe and exciting environment for the kids, but also to provide an open public street level where social interaction could happen.

By lifting the building up I am able to

provide niches from the two roads that serves as extensions of the public street life. On the north side the community has access to a outdoor cinema, while the east side works as a notice board for the library with daily papers and magazines.

BUILDING IN SOUTH

By pushing the building 700 mm away from the wall, it opens up

possibilities for a more open facade on this side, still being shaded.

The varitites in height creates internal

courtyards and voids where light could be let in from above and from angles, since the building is quite contained in general.
