The Fruit and Vegetable Market in Dhalgarwad is a market that is set up every morning and dismantled every evening. It is an informal market of street vendors and people selling produce from carts surrounded by more permanent shops and wholesale shops. The site is surrounded by schools and other markets and is bustling with life every day and calms down during the evening after the market has been dismantled and the people gone to rest.
Some of the street vendors actually live on the site as it is their only way of making a living. Dhalgarwad transitional homes is an intervention which aims to bring in transitional homes into the market in the form of an orphanage and transitional apartments for mentioned families and the families of immigrant workers. The project introduces economic opportunities in the form of workshops dealing in the refinement of fabric, which is a heritage craft to the city of Ahmedabad. The thought is for the families to work in the workshops in exchange for an apartment and while they get to learn a new skill, the profit will go to the funding of the orphanage.
The project is also an investigation in bringing elements of the dwelling, of the domestic down to the market site and possibly expand the market up into the dwelling areas as well, in trying to integrate the people of the market and the inhabitants of the intervention. This is to try and provide the orphans and the people trying to find their footing in a new city with a community from which they can start a new life in Ahmedabad.

The dwelling part of the project consists of two different units - one apart- ment unit consisting of two apartments with shared facilities and one or- phanage unit with two dorms of five children and one room for a guardian.
The apartment units are comprised of a sleeping area and a transparent transitioning area out toward the common spaces above ground. There is a foldable wall in between the sleeping area and the transitional area to allow for some flexibility. In total there are 9 apartment units housing a total of 18 families and three orphanage units of 30 children and three guardians. Dispersed in between the units are kitchens that are shared between 4 families. Alternatively 2 families and one orphanage unit.
