FACADE EXPRESSION

A contemporary matter in architecture today is to approach the existing and to preserve its context. Demolition changes a buildings sustain- ability factor negatively which was calculated to be positive before it was built and should therefor be carefully considered. How to ap- proach the past time architecture is one of the societal issues of today.

On the 8 000 square meter site, two lamellas rises. One of them is 14 stories high and the lower one relates to the heights of the build- ings at Sturegatan. These functionalistic lamel- las is placed at the south corner of the site, creating a dismal area which can be associated with a courtyard. By interviews with people who utilizes the existing buildings daily, it was clear that the courtyard was unappreciated.

The sunstudies showed that the north of the site was the area with the highest light and sun quality. Unfortunately, a temporary parkring ga- rage is situated where such quality exist.

Between Prästgårdsgatan and Sturegatan it dif- ferentiates 12 meters, which is four stories in the existing buildings. Sturegatan and Präst- gårdsgatan are two important streets in the project. Sturegatan is mentioned in the compre- hensive plan of Sundbyberg as an urban street, which means an active street with premises and offices along the lane. Prästgårdsgatan however, is a so called resident street where the dwell- ing is prioritiesed. It was important for the project to relate to these two different typol- ogies.

VOLUME

The desire with the studies was to create a form which did not affect the dwelling street Präst- gårdsgatan, but still contribute to an urban quality for Sturegatan mentioned by Sundbyberg municipality.

By straddeling the volume in to the terrain, created a building which was anonymous towards Prästgårdsgatan and an explicit entrance facade in line with the other buildings at Sturegatan.

With buildings growing from the ground there are an unusual amount of dark gross floor area which is an issue of quality when it comes to the right of non artificial light. This determined the material of the facade to be as seethrough as possibly, so a glass facade was suited.

The glass facades turning south was a problem for the building because of the direct sun- light heating the interior. Studies where made to solve this problem without external sunscreen by exploring the shape of the volume in section.

The result showed that by rotating the facade by 30 degrees, the direct sunlight decreased by 25%.

The construction idea was generated by the ro- tated facades. To imitate and follow the form typologi of the facades, the construction is a sunfeather where the pillar closest to the ground is rotated zero and rotates ten degrees as closer the pillar stands to the facade.

PROGRAM

The assigned program was approximately 2 000 square meters. If the program was situated in a one story high building, the footprint would be one forth of the site. If the new building would relate to its surrounding and its heights, the footprint of the project would be less than one eight of the sites area. This was the primary reason why the program needed to be advanced.

Another societal issue in Stockholm today is the use of the land and if the city keeps growing with the same exponential curve as it has done the past years, a building with 2 000 square meters on a site as big as 8 000 would not be a building process in the right direction.

The program advanced by size, but also in an- other societal matter. The old building for the school of Architecture in Stockholm, KTH, was situated in the same building next to an archi- tecture office. Even though the education was close to the occupation, no exchange occured between those two. On reason is that the archi- tecture did not encourage this exchange. The new Vocational School of Sundbyberg is created to integrate the student with the worker by the architecture.

Construction teqchnology was part of the program and to analyse the spatial area for this type of education, a study visit was made to Stockholms Byggtekniska Gymnasium where the principal was interviewed. The study visit resulted in three important points for the project.

- First, was the way SBG used their huge work- shop areas. They used a method called space-in- space where smaller components created qualita- tive spaces. For example, the painting workshop had tiny huts, two square meters each, which created spaces in their surrounding. The tin- smith workshop had folded short walls which gen- erated the same thing.

- Second, was their pedagogical and educational

“showing walls” where different types of mate- rial and components where showned to teach the students.

- Third, was the way they examined their stu- dents. The principal said literally: “If we ex- amine a painter for his painting skills, why not paint the school?”

The vision of the future created two phrases in the project where phrase one is a new build- ing and phase two is a renovation of the exist- ing. The intention of the phases is to present a solution if the school needs more space because of the constantly growing city.

REFERENCE

S:t Görans Gymnasium is a vocational school sit- uated in Stockholm. The building is created of the architect couple Geissendorf. Their main en- trance is the centre and the sign for the build- ing. The light hall is famous for beeing lively and a gathering point for students.
