Degree programme of Energy Technology 2017-18
Become an expert in control and optimization of energy systems
and explore the potential of bio-economy innovation in distributed energy systems in the city of Vaasa, the biggest energy industry cluster in the Nordic countries
At Novia University of Applied Sciences we believe that future solutions to the challenge of sustainability in the field of energy is finding intelligent methods of managing, controlling and more efficiently consuming, recycling and reusing the available resources and being able to understand the challenge also outside the context of engineering.
Achieving this require curious, courageous and creative thinkers and doers and our program aim to foster these future ambassadeurs building bridges through technology and diversity guiding us into the energy transition. In this program the traditional engineering professional knowledge and skills in natural sciences and technology are boosted with the multidisciplinary perspectives, understanding of context and controversies and innovation needed to be this engineer of the future.
Extent 60ECTS
Teaching language: English Duration 2 semesters
The program is intended for 3rd or 4th year students in for example the fields of mechanical, electrical or civil engineering. Can also be attended through the open UAS as an extension of a previous B.Sc (eng).

Energy Systems, Distributed Energy Systems and Bioeconomy Innovation 15 ECTS
This module invites the students to a multidisciplinary learning journey discovering the potential of bio- economy innovation and distributed energy systems solutions in solving real life challenges
- Principles of design and engineering of distributed energy concepts and technologies - Analyzing, designing, developing solutions for distributed energy in the energy village concept - Assessing the bio-economy and solar potential of a selected area and identifying the
technological solutions enabling harvesting and converting it into power or heat.
- Partially virtual course, expert lecturers and coaches, workshop and laboratory work - Problem based learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, leadership and self-management
The Vaasa region boasts the largest energy cluster - EnergyVaasa - in the Nordic region. The cluster
encompasses more than 140 companies which employ over 11, 000 people and 80% of production is exported.
This represents 30% of Finland’s total exports in the energy industry and is 12% of the country’s total technology exports. Many of the companies are global market leaders in the production and distribution of electricity.
Welcome to the energy capital of the Nordic countries, embraced by barren, beautiful archipelago!
