In the year 49811104-5 al-Tibrizi wrote another note to this effect for his pupil Abu 'Ali al-flasan b. .Ali on the title page. No marginal notes by al-Tibrizi however are found in the MS.

Carefully vocalized. Note the way the ending -az is written, cf. wa-ra{ulun in l. 4, and the same word in l. 5; note also how the final form of bA' , fi, , thA' , .fA, , and sometimes lam as well, consists of the characteristic element of the letter augmented with a horizontal extension; the horizontal stroke of kaf is not written;

note also the sign u over rd' and ;ad to distinguish these from zay and QAd; dat is sometimes provided with a dot underneath, in order to distinguish from ra,.

L. Krehl, W. Wright, Leiden 1855-60, vol. l, p. g95), who was a pupil of al-Tibrizi, as is testified both by al-Maqqari, and a note in al-Tibrizi's hand on the title page of this MS, dated Madinat al-Saldm 49611102-3. The copyist wrote his name on the title page (f. 16a); the colophon was probably written by al-Tibrizi (f. 237b). The Sarh Abyat l;lalt al-Mantiq was written in the margin by Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Sdranqd5i in or after 95311546. These entries are usually introduced by the letters s/ being the abbre- viation of 'al-Sirdfi'. It is tempting to try to discover Andalusian features in Sa'd al-Khayr's hand (e.g. the sad, cf. al-;ibydn in l. 5 of the text), but nothing conclusive can be observed.

The text is carefully vocalized. Note the sign " over rd' , sin and ;dd; also the way the ending -an is written;

note also the characteristic way of realising the lam-alif ligature (e.g. in al-arydf, l. 8 of the text;

in la, l. 2 of the marginal addition at the right; and in illa, in l. I of the marginal addition at the left on the lower half of the page); note also the absence of the alif al-w,iqdya. The number 8J over the word bab (1.6 of the text) was added in red ink at a later time.

al-Fadl b. flatim al-Nayrizi (3rd/9th cent., GIS IV, 283; the MS has al-Narizi, cf. f. lb, l. 9). Cf. P. Voorhoeve, Handlist ..., p. 392.

The MS contains books l-6 and the beginning of book 7 only (ff. 1-81a). The MS was originally a mafimu'a of several mathematical treatises, as the table of contents on the title page shows (f. 1a).

The part of the MS preserved in Leiden contains also K. Manald'us fi 'l-Aikal

MS Paris (Bibl. Nat.) Arab. 2458 (cat. De Slane, p. a3\ is part of this very same mafimu'a.

1897-1932, pt. 3, fasc. 2, pp.206-209.

The figure is executed in red, as are the numbers of the demonstrations in the text to which the author refers. Note the slight difference between the writing of the letters denoting the lines or part of lines in the figure, and the execution of the same letters when used in words. The extra flourish in the final shape of the sin, ;ad, qaf, niln, and the upward stroke on the ddl are especially characteristic; srn is sometimes provided with three dots underneath (cf. twice sa'ir, l. 3); combinations of two dots are usually written vertically.

Epilogue

The Arabic manuscripts presented here belong to the oldest part of the collection of oriental manuscripts of the ieiden University Library. They were bought in the first half of the seventeenth century in Istanbul, and occasionally in Aleppo, by Jacobus Golius (1596-1667)' professor of Arabit and Mathematics at Leiden University (or. 100, or. 184), and his pupil Leuinrrs Warner (1619-1665), ambassador of the Dutch Republic to the Porte'

These seven specimens have been selected mainly on the basis of their age. They all date from the 5th and 6th centuries A.H. (l1th and l2th centuries A.D.), which is fairly old for Arabic manuscripts. Furthermore I have aimed at a certain variety of subject matter. The manuscripts from which the specimens have been taken deal respectively with prophetology' lexicography' grammar, poetry, philosophy, the Arabic Physica of Aristotle, and Euclid's Elementa' My choice has arso been decided by my own predilection for celebrated authors, famous scribes and precious manuscriPts.

The specimens (which are all reproduced in real size), are given in chronological order, but from this small sample no .on.iusions should be drawn on the development of the Arabic script. The fact thai the majority of these specimens were written in Baghdad at approxi- mately the same time and mostly in the same intellectual circle (the group around al-Tibrizi) illustrates the extreme hazardousness of guesses in this field' For even among the MSS presented here, which are closely related in background, there are huge divergencies in irandwriting, for which the different origins of their respective scribes may account'

Apart from some remarks on the most obvious peculiarities of the scripts, I have had to refrain from giving a palaeographical analysis of these specimens. This is due to the fact that in this field even the most basic work still remains to be done' No adequate criteria for the description of Arabic handwriting do as yet exist. The mere fact that all scripts presented here may conveniently be called naskhi prou., that this name is of hardly any use and might just as well be discarded. Not even ihe ,oughest guide lines as to provenance and dating of Arabic manuscripts have been drawn, and this work can not be done without taking Persian and Turkish palaeography into account. In offering this selection I had a double purpose in mind:to presenti gil-pre of the richness of the Leiden University Library holdings, and to provide students oflrabic bibliography and palaeography with the opportunity to study these seven bookhands by including ,o-. bibliographical data and a transcription of the whole or part of the text. The absence of this kind of information is a conspicuous deficiency in most existing atlasses'
