The village of flängan in Bergslagen is quintessential swedish countryside.
Though only two hours away by car from Stockholm, the vivid urban life seems more distant when entering the tranquil ambience created by the dramatic landscape and the picturesque formation of houses. While profit- ing from the great qualities that countryside living provides in form of close relation to nature, open space and a sense of community, the area also raises architectural questions. When moving along the gravelled main road that leads through the small village, house after house repeats the same architectural formula - two story wooden houses with gable roofs, redpainted facades and white corners. Is it possible to create new architecture in an area with such a strict architectural costume without making a pastiche or completely turning your back against the existing architecture?
The project aims to create new architecture in such an area without being bound by the traditional formal rules of the existing houses, which is often copied to create new “contextual architecture”.

Map over Flängan
Like many other villages in Bergslagen, the mining industry was for a long time the most important industry in Flängan. Still to this day, several furnaces and mines can be found in the area. Though not in use, they are still a strong symbol for the history of the region. This industry also affected the housing typology of Flängan with the dominating typology of the area being the simple miners house - single family houses with one or two floors.
This typology has also been the basis for the project, with the addition of a double height atelier space for each house.
This addition is motivated by the possibility to create a great workplace in the calm and peaceful ambience that the village provides.
The choosen site is found in the outskirts of Flängan. Having been a test site for the search of iron ore, the site is not as densely vegetated as the surrounding topography, still though with a certain character of forest land.
