Need to We

Get Back to Nature

threat against people's health. In today's society It’s easy to experien- ce stress, and feel mentally drained by all the obligations and press- ure that lies on our shoulders. It’s highly common to feel congested,

which results in negative effects on our minds and bodies.

attention and memory after being exposed to nature rather than urban environments. The university of Essex has done something called the

“green exercise”, which is a study that shows that a

five-minute

dose of being exposed to nature

brings immediate wellbeing.

Further, It’s shown

that It works with all green environments; Urban parks, nature reserve, wild or farmed, small or large. Neither does It matter what activity that’s performed. Theres’s is an addi- tional positive impact when It includes social engagement as well.

However, research shows

that being in natu- re reduces those negative impacts. Nature is reha-

bilitating for us. In other studies done by “Karolinska Institutet” they’ve seen that people performs better at

And water also affects us in positive ways

, we experience calmness and become happier by being close to water. An ocean consists of an endlessness which

creates a sense of calm within us. Those living close to water seem to have an increase in social engagement and physical activities in their life.

All this science and research

are pointing us to one obvious

solution for increasing the life quality of people; We need to

Get Back to Natu-

re

. We need to integrate It more into our life, and we need to do so now. How do we attract people to leave the busy and stress- ful citylife, and get back to what they really

need? By adding and enhancing the activi- ties that’s connected to nature.

Tomtebo is a place where the connection and closeness to nature

needs to be highlighted. It’s located in direct connection with Nydalasjön, which is a beautiful area for outdoor activities both for summer and winter, such as skiing, ice-skating, swimming, or walking. This is an opportunity to bring people closer to nature, and attract the people living in Tom- tebo and the rest of Umeå to It. To take advantage of the availability of nature and water, by creating a space that makes It even more ac- cessible and useable. By creating something that doesn’t interfere with the nature but only

Enhances the Experience.

What’s needed in a public space in connection to Nyda- lasjön is a place that feels

warm, welcoming, safe and blends in to the rest of nature, but still is intriguing. A place that makes people want to pass by spontaneously while walking past It, or be a place you would travel to from a distance. It should be a place where you are able to stay at when you’re passing by without feeling any pressure to consume or pay for something to be able to use It. I want to design a space that focus on enhancing the calming effect of

nature and attract people to It.

Since the 1990's stress related men- tal illness has increased.

According to WHO (World Health Organisation) mental

health is the biggest and fastest growing problem in the world and the biggest

Since It’s important for us to get back to nature, and integrate it more into our life.

ADDING AN ACTIVITY

COLD BATHING

Cold bath houses are simple bathing facilities on the beach or in the water near the beach, which is the first hand designed to make it comfortable and protected for bathing in un-

heated sea or lake water. Kallbadhus came to the cry in Sweden towards the end of the 19th

century and was then often related to health procedures.

THE SUN’S POSITION

The sun’s position in relation to the programmes were important, since they need different

amount of sunlight. For example, northern lights watching should be facing north.

By looking at how far out the shade would stretch out on the lake both mid-day during

the darkest months of the year but also late evening during the lightest, from that I could

make a decision on how far out on the lake I needed the buildings to be.

It was important to keep in mind that the intervention would be the center of

the already existing activities, while also adding new ones to the site.

The different programmes had different qualities that could be divided into dif-

ferent modules. They would all be connected, but still divided.

SKETCHES

The concept behind the style of the building was that It should feel like the

buildings have been there for awhile and is not something that just have been

built. The Exterior should feel old, classic and blend in to its surrounding.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

THE PERFECT SPOT FOR WHEN THE SKY TURNS GREEN

The lake is a popular spot to go when there’s northern lights. The distance

from neighborhoods and artificial lights make the sky more visible. This pro-

jects enables more opportunities in ways to watch the northern lights, both

from the inside and outside.
