Förslag på vidare forskning

Eftersom historisk institutionalism ser på historiens betydelse av en institution

utveckling kan det rimligvis sägas att framtida forskning kommer att behöva applicera historisk institutionalism på framtida fördragsförändringar och nya bestämmelser för att förklara institutionens utveckling och nya aktörer kommer träda in inom institutionen och därmed bör intresset för identifierandet av pådrivande och motståndsaktörer fortsatt finnas i framtiden.

Det skall också påpekas att det finns andra intressanta teorier inom den

nyinstitutinalistiska skolan som skulle kunna appliceras på fallet, det Europeiska rådet. Som Jonas Tallberg skrev i Bargaining Power in the European Council så är

forskningen begränsad av det Europeiska rådet och därmed är forskning av det Europeiska rådet särskilt välkommet.

Istället för att använda sig av HI så finns det bland annat Normativ institutionalism och Rational Choice Instutionalism inom den nyinstitutinalistiska skolan som skulle ge alternativa förklaringar till utvecklingen av det Europeiska rådet.
