Studiens resultat tyder på att motivation och mental tuffhet är två viktiga komponenter inom idrotten. Ur ett bredare perspektiv kan det därmed vara viktigt för tränare och coacher att förstå vikten av de olika faktorer som är viktiga under en frånvaro för att få en lyckad återgång till tävling. Som tränare kan du hjälpa atleten med att sätta upp en tydlig och realistisk målsättning och därefter lägga upp en tydlig plan som gör att atleten känner att den klarar av utmaningen, stötta atleten under vägen och se till att individen fortfarande känner en samhörighet med övriga medlemmar i laget eller teamet.
Mental tuffhet och motivation är däremot inte enbart viktigt inom elitidrott, även yngre
generationer inom föreningsidrott samt motionärer använder sig utav dessa även om de inte har någon kunskap inom området. En drivkraft till att utöva en idrott, ta sig ut på en promenad eller cykeltur, spela match eller arbeta i trädgården finns hos de flesta individer, som genom olika former av motivation utför sin syssla. Arbete, skola och vardagliga projekt kan även vara områden som har en fördel att använda sig av mental tuffhet och motivation då det inte är idrottsspecifikt, även elitidrottare har ett liv utanför tävlingsbanan precis som övrig befolkning
38 och samtliga individer kan med hjälp av att utveckla sin mentala tuffhet och hitta sin drivkraft att prestera inom sitt individuella område som exempelvis snickare, förälder eller ekonomichef.
SLUTSATS
I denna studie kunde man se att i dagens läge finns det inte några signifikanta skillnader i mindfulness, mental tuffhet och motivation hos respondenterna, vilka är ett litet urval av elitskidåkare från Sverige och Norge som varit frånvarande från tävling och elitverksamhet i minst fyra veckor. Oavsett om a-motivation, yttre- eller inre motivation är den högst skattade formen av motivation under en frånvaro är mental tuffhet och mindfulness viktiga komponenter för att ta sig tillbaka till tävling. För att få en djupare förståelse och svar på vad det innebär att vara medveten om den situation atleten befinner sig i, hur atleten känner självförtroende och kontroll, vad det är som driver atleten att ta sig igenom frånvaron och hur övriga faktorer spelar en roll i det hela rekommenderas djupgående intervjuer med elitidrottare som har haft en ofrivillig frånvaro.
