BACKGROUND

This is a report presenting the results of measurement of road surface

macrotexture, made in the Netherlands in November 1986 at the request of

Rijkswaterstaat in Delft.

DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD AND THE MEASURING CAR

See the paper in Annex. Note, however, that the unevenness measurement

presented there is not yet possible.

Note also that no corrections have been made in the presented texture

spectra for reduced response at the shortest wavelengths (2-5 mm).

However, for reasons of comparison, this is not necessary. Should such

corrections be desired they should be:

KEY FOR INTERPRETATION OF THE DIAGRAMS

Explanation of the overall values used.

dB(M)

values give the texture level in dB for the texture wavelength

band starting at 2 mm and finishing at 100 mm (same weight for

all the bands in this range). We call it "Macrotexture Level".

dB(W)

values give the texture level in dB for the texture wavelength

band starting at 125 mm and finishing at 500 mm (same weight

for all the bands in this range). We call it "Waviness Level"

dB(R)

values give the texture level in dB for the texture wavelength

band starting at 10 mm and finishing at 100 mm (same weight for

all the bands in this range). We call it "Waviness Level"

dB(F)

values give the texture level in dB for the texture wavelength

band starting at 2 mm and finishing at 80 mm (same weight for all

the bands in this range). We call it "Fine Texture Level"

dB(5 mm) values give the texture level in dB for the texture wavelength

band starting at 4 mm and finishing at 6.3 mm (same weight for all

the bands in this range). It is one of the values suggested for

Characterization with respect to tire/road noise influence.

dB(80 mm) values give the texture level in dB for the texture wavelength

band starting at 63 mm and finishing at 100 mm (same weight for

all the bands in this range). It is one of the values suggested for

Characterization with respect to tire/road noise influence.

In all cases, the reference rms displacement, to which the dB values are

referred, is 10'6 m.
