What

Colorado Grain & Feed Ass

iation

and What Does it

DO?

It Is:

An organization started more than 50 years ago to promote the welfare of the grain and feed business in Colorado. It is made up of grain elevators, feed manufacturers, feed retailers, seed plants, dehydrators, fertilizer firms, millers,

commodity futures brokers, cash grain merchants and dry edible bean dealers. The suppliers to these firms also belong as Associate Members. The Association brings these firms together so they may have a stronger voice in unity than they have individually.

A category of membership is also available for individuals who are not eligible for membership in other ways. It is called Affiliate Membership and is for educators and government personnel.

It Does: INVOLVEMENT

Legislation The Association's lobbyist, with the help of the Legislative Committee, the Political Action Policy Committee, members particularly interested in special issues, Directors, and Staff,

works for legislation that is beneficial to the trade and against that which is detrimental to the industry in Colorado.

In Washington, D.C., our interests are well represented by the National Grain and Feed Association, American Feed Manufacturers Association, and American Society of Association Executives.

SERVICES

Cargo Insurance CGFA members may insure bulk grain in transit under our special policy which also insures against contamination. Cargo other than bulk grain may also be insured by special arrangement.

IGF Insurance This casualty company works exclusively with agribusiness providing bonds, fire, burglary and general liability for our member firms.

Health, Life & Disability Insurance Our offering of a group insurance rate to members is a plus for many small and medium size firms. Deductibles in $100, $200 or $500 amounts and a number of coverage options are desirable traits of our insurance plans. Also, if you want to talk about insurance but aren't ready to get involved with a salesman, the Association staff is as near as your phone.

Small Business Tax Control This is a subscription service giving corpowte and individual tax pointers monthly.

Bankruptcy Insurance Small firms that would otherwise not have access to this type of

insurance are eligible if they are members. This is a specialized insurance for prtecting yourself against companies that are your large accounts whose financial difficulties would create extreme hardship for your company.

Job Mart As a free service the Association keeps resumes and job openings in our Denver office and attempts to match up jobs and people whenever possible.

Forms We sell customized grain purchase contracts.

MEETINGS

Annual Convention is held on Washington's Birth

-day Holi-day from Sun-day through Tues-day noon. The event draws over 500 participants from across the nation. Members pay a lesser registration fee than non-members. Educational Programs vary as a need is determined. Programs have included hedging, safety, corn, wheat and barley grading, first aid, management, animal nutrition, transportation and feed mill opera ions. Members pay a lesser fee than non-members.

Committees only meet when there is necessary business to conduct. At times Committee meetings are held in rural areas of the state and members in that vicinity are invited to attend or to join the Committee for coffee after the meeting. All Association members have the opportunity to serve on Committees.

PUBLICATIONS

Mountain States Grain and Feed Directory is an annual publication giving information about grain and feed businesses in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. It is the only such source in these states. Each member firm of CGFA gets one free copy.

Digest The newsletter for Association members highlights local news about members and also capsulizes stories of general importance to agri-culture and the trade.

FRO THE MIDWEST TRAFFIC COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN, OWEN SMITH. This is to advise

ofWTL Application E-21-5047 dated August 25th. This proposes to amend item

110 WTL Tariff 331-S to provide for monthly settlements of transit accounts

in place of annual settlements as are now provided in WTL and Southwestern

territories. We do not have the SWSB number, but proposal should be

circu-lated in a day or so •••••••• G • • • • • • • This is docketed as a carrier proposal

and the only argument made is that the application is the results of records

made by the WTL Freight Managers committee and the Southwestern Executive

committeeo This proposal has.been widely circulated in the last few days

and now a public hearing has been requested ••• 8•••••o••••••Our purpose in

/ this notice is to be sure that all of our members who have transit accounts

are advised, as time still exists to express your views to the carriers and

to us. At present the Association viewpoint seems to be the same as pre-viously expressed under WTL Application 21-3083, wherein quarteriy transit settlements were proposede We made strong objections at that time and we

see no reason 'to change our viewpointo••••••••••••••We will appreciate any

expression from members and copies of any correspondence with the railroads.

A GRAND AWA...TID plaque now hangs in the Midwest

office--awarded to the Association by the American Society of

Association Executives -- for "outstanding service"

with particular emphasis on the Production School.

MIDWEST .. :films NEW HORIZONS and PROGRESS OE NUTRITION shown in Mexico

M1D Europe are enthusiasti"cally received. They do a good job of

selling the modern feed story and will fit into fall ~eetings for

your dealers and farmers ••••••••• Cbarlie Ross, AssociAte Farm Director

Topeka, Kansas

says---I can assure you it was a pleasure for WIBW-TV to show

Midwest's film "New Horizons" to our TV audience. In·

my opinion, this is an excellent film. The new and

in-teresting to~ics in the animal nutrition world were

v::i.vidly brougbt bef0re the viewing audience w.t th good

taste both in the cbarts and dialogue present~d. I

thought Jche subjects were well chosen and well

present-ed, by a very competent pe,:-sonnel ••••••••• ~ ·

Tom Lawrence, Lawrence-Leiter & Co., Kansas City, Mo.

One of the most consistent demands on the business man and the salesman is the ability to get along with and influence the thinking of other people. In his presentation at the Ames, Iowa conference on September 12, Thomas H. Lawrence, senior partner of Lawrence~Leiter & Co., Kansas City-management consultants, will conduct,, one of his nationally known seminars on the human relations aspects

of selling.

I.awrence's subject --"Selljng Means Service" --stresses the principle that a sale is based on two fundamentals; first, every sale implies an exchange of responsibilities; and secondly, that selling does not depend nearly so much on techniques as on an understanding of human behavior.

A unique feature of this presentation is the 11personalized11 impact. Fach

in-dividual gains a clearer understanding of his own capacities and potential. What Lawrence calls "personal service" in selling has a direct bearing on the feed industry, and can mean real profits to the feed salesman.

For over twenty years, Iawrence has conducted specialized, educational programs for many national firms in the field of human relations; he bas given particular study to the problems.of motivating people i~.selling and management. Over the pa.st two years, Lawrence's consulting firm has undertaken studies of the differ-ent requiremdiffer-ents in selling in rural and urban customer markets.

As the seminar subject --"Selling Means Service" -- indicates, this program will stress practical "take away" ideas that can be put to immediate use on the job. Lawrence brings his experience as an executive, and consultant to bear on the everyday aspects of building dealer service.and_improving personal performance. The unique feature of his present~tion is an individual reference guide used by each participant in the meeting.
