respect to an accompanying sentence

• is not syntactically related to other accompanying expressions

• may include a combination of sounds not otherwise found in the language

• No ideophones

• Is this because ideophones have been confused

with interjections?

Interjections in SAG [the Swedish

Academy Grammar]

• Syntactic description [my translation]

• The interjection phrase, most often composed of only an interjection, is normally its own independent non-clausal sentence. (vol. 2: s. 767)

• Interjections normally express their content in a

more lively and spontaneous […] manner (Vol. 2, p

746)

• Contain many onomatopoeic expressions. e.g, pang

’boom; bam’, svisch ’swish; whoosh’

Descriptions of events: krasch

(‘crash’), bingbång (‘ding-dong’)

• Many interjections have a descriptive meaning, i.e.

the speaker portrays an event (SAG vol 2, p 751)

• Most of these interjections are onomatopoeic (SAG
