UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING A.C.T. SURVEY, 2002

In the spring of 2002, the Dean of Arts

&

Sciences at the University of Wyoming

commissioned the Survey Research Center (SRC) for data entry and analysis on a two-part

survey of student opinions at UW. This document presents the results from the pati of the survey

containing questions that were also asked nationwide by American College Testing (ACT).

METHODS

The questionnaire, designed by ACT, has been used previously at UW. The SRC played

no role in design, sampling, or data collection. Respondents were those students agreeing to

participate, from a sampling of spring semester classes taught at 9 AM on Wednesdays, plus

additional classes in the Outreach School. All students in attendance on that day received two

questionnaires, including a survey specific to UW and either the ACT or another national form.

During May and June, 2002, SRC personnel entered the data from the ACT questionnaires using

specialized software for that purpose and procedures for quality control. There were 930

respondents frmn the Laramie campus, and 63 Outreach respondents. Simple random samples

would yield margins of error of about

3.5 and 12.5 percentage points, respectively, with 95o/o

confidence. However, the cluster design used (sampling entire classes) produces larger margins

of error that cannot be precisely calculated from the information available to the SRC.

SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS

The accompanying graphs summarize some of the findings for Laramie campus students.

The 2002 respondents included a somewhat higher proportion of male students than in the 1998

or 2000 surveys. As before, respondents were overwhelmingly Caucasian. The age distribution

of Laramie campus students has shifted in the direction of younger students in the past four

years, and the percentage of graduate students has decreased, especially at the Ph.D.level. By

contrast, more than two-thirds of Outreach students (results not graphed) are older than 29, and

nearly that fraction are graduate students. There have been no pronounced shifts in student

satisfaction since 2000. Most students, whether on-campus or Outreach, report being satisfied

with libraries, computer services, and - to a lesser degree

-

residence halls. Opinions about

food services are mixed, while parking continues to be a source of considerable dissatisfaction.

ORGANIZATION OF THIS REPORT

This introductory section concludes with the graphs just discussed. Part One of this

report, which follows, provides the cotnplete question wording, response frequencies and

percentages for every item in the survey, for all Laramie campus respondents. (Results are

presented for the 2002 survey and, for comparison, the 2000 survey as well). Part Two shows

the 2002 Laramie catnpus results separately by respondent's college. Grouping of respondents

into colleges was accomplished using the respondents' self-reported major field, since college as

such was not reported. Part Three provides response frequencies and percentages for Outreach

students from the 2002 survey, since the 2000 survey was restricted to Laratnie campus students.

The final part of this report provides the full text of all written comments, arranged by college.
