FACES OF THE PROFESSIONAL NURSE: PAST PRESENT AND FUTU

RE

There are rich thoughts and memories of faces, women and men who have touched

our lives. The nurse who stayed with our mother during our birth was our first nurse,

even

though we do not remember. We see the face of a nurse who cared for us when we were

sick as a child.

There were nurses in our schools and in public

health

.

We remember pictures

of

nurses in military uniforms sharing the pain and terror of nursing leaders; they managed

busy hospitals, taught, conducted research, asked questions about the nature of caring and

shared new knowledge through writing.

We face the future of nursing with knowledge, commitment and caring. Beth-El

College

of Nursing is grateful for our nursing

legacy

which comes from the

Colorado

Conference

Deaconess Hospital Training school (1904-1911 ); Beth

-

El

Training

School

( 1911-1942); and Beth-El School of Nur~ing ( 1942-1987).

Hope graduated from Carra-y Medical Center In 1965. Since then she has had a wide range of experiences In her professional career. She received her Master'• Degree from Rutger'• In 1979. She was In private

practice from 1979 to 1989. During that time she also taught at the University of North Alabama and then at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Hope ls known for her sense of humor, love of life and laughter. She - • married In 1987 to Joe

and considers herself a "Lucky Person" to have Inherited a great blended family which Includes her daughter Laura Leigh, Joe'• children, Tim, Tammy and Gregory. She describes granddaughter

Jacqueline as a "Great Joy In My Life".

One of Hope'• hobbles Is gardening. Although Hope enjoys all types of flowers, daylllles are her

favorite because they are ao colorful and come In many varieties. Her granddaughter comes to visit twice

a year where they enjoy planting the garden In the spring and playing In the snow In the winter! Hope also has an herb garden which provlc!e•·euentlal Ingredient• for her second hobby,

"Cooking". Hope enjoys giving dinner parties and experimenting with fresh herbs and spices to enhance the flavor of foods.

A. Senior clan advisor, Hope wants to share the following thoughts with the claaa of 1995 •••••.. "In the thirty years since I've graduated from Nursing school, the technology we used has nurses has changed dramatically but the euence of nursing - CARI.RO - has not. No other profeulon provides their graduates the opportunity to Interact with people In this - Y• Too often we eet caught up In the 'luues' of the profession. What we must not forget to do la take time to cherish those special moment• when we know we have touched the client'• soul and the client baa touched oura."

It ls for Hope'• devotion to student education and advocacy and for her love of the nursing

profession that we, the clan of 1995, wish to convey our love, respect and gratitude by dedicating this yearbook to our mentor •... Hope Mena Ill

IMAGES OF BRITISH NURSING.••••••

Three students from Beth-El spent their winter break in England to learn about the history of the

nursing profession and how the modem British health care system works. This independent nursing

course provided the Colorado students to compare and contrast similarities and differences in the delivery

of health care between the United States and England. Through the efforts of Jo Ruth and Sally Olds of

Beth-El, and their friendship with Heather Butler-Gallic and Michael McGeorge, ofEngland, the students

of Beth-El have been given

this

opportunity to travel to England and experience another culture. This

same program allows for nursing students from England to study here. By this exchange of nurses and

nursing students, opportunities to exchange ideas and experience other cultures has provided a strong base

for suengthening international friendships. Working together, Jo Ruth and Heather Butler-Gallic provided

the students with an itinerary that gave opportunities for cultural enrichment along with.an in-<iepth view

of community health nursing in London. Pat Conroy expressed her learning experience in England in the

following paragraphs:

"What did we learn from all of

this?

Nurses in England are very much like nurses here. They

care. They want the best for their patients. They work hard. We don't have a monopoly on good ideas

(like the bathtub). There is usually more than one way to do something, and our way is not the only way.

We can learn much from

their

example in providing holistic care."

"l would strongly encourage nursing students to take advantage of opportunities for international

study. It can provide a whole new perspective on nursing-and it is a lot of fun!"

PORTIA JOHNSON, R.N.C.

Mrs. Johnson, a senior in 1he RN advanced placcmenl program here at Beth-El, has brought wilh

her an interesting and skilled past. Born and raised in Barbados, West Indies, Mrs. Johnson shares her

expcnenccs with "The Chart":

My mother set the pace of the tradition of nursing in my family by becoming a nurse. For as long

as I can remember, I wanted to be a nu=. The waiting list for student nursing in Barbados was very long, so in 1959 I went to England wbcrc it was easy to be entered into a good RN program. The training was

traditional and very bard work. The Freshmen lived in a world of bedpans&. back care for the first year

while at the same time, juggled term papers and classwork. ID 1963, I graduated as a State Registered

Nurse (SRN). I continued my training for ooc more year (1964 -1965) to become a State Certified

Midwife. The first baby I ddiverci:I is now 32 )'QJ'S oldl When I came to the States in 1967, I was

accustomed to sociaJ.iz.ed medicioc and doctors doing house calls. What an adjustment it was to find that a

doctor's house call was an unknown entity here and bealth care costs were in some instances urucachablel The one common faetor between the British Nurse and the American Nurse is that the patient· s

bealth care is of primal)' imponance. The process of caring should continue to be the rule and not lhe

exception!

CONG RA TULA TIONS.

You

have been trained to do one of the most

demanding jobs on earth. Your skill, your knowledge, your

compassion will touch the lives of thousands of people during

the span of your career. Sometimes, you will feel that you have

the best job on earth. Sometimes, it will seem like the worst. But

in a world that is full of empty talk about caring for and about

your fellow man, you will always know that you are doing

something about it every day of your life.
