---This property is located on, a nd at the intersection of, the three most famous veins on Quartz Hill, and is one of the Best known mines in a District that has produced $185,000,000, The United states Patent numbers of the claims, viz, 43, 44 and 330, are proof that the early p z-ospector s , who locat ed this

ground, considered it the best in the locality.

An indication of their good judgement is the fact that they took out over $100,000, working entirely by hand, and. using very crude methods of extraction.

Owing to the death of two of the owners, the property lay id.le for s ornetwcmty-f:l've years, and was then acquired outright by one of the surviving partners, a Hr. Lake.

Mr. Lake Inat a'l Led the present equipment, consisting of a substantial frame shaft house, 42 x 54 feet, 35 H.P. Vulcan Im-proved Hoist Engine, suitable boiler, blacksmith outfit, etc.

He also sunk the shaft to a depth of 750 feet, drove levels of vsrious lengths at aprro x imateLy each hundz-ed feet, and con-nected the 500 foot level wi th the "Quartz Hill" tunnel.

Incidentally, he took out over $80,000, fran a very moderate portion of the stoping ground he opened up.

In the moanti me, the Gilpin County Tramway was built, and a spur track was run into, and under, the shaft house, affording excellent shipping facilities.

to each of these three oLatms has become incontesti, ble on account of their great age, being among the first issued to mineral claimants in the state of Colorado. That th e J1 roperty consists of the Barnes Lode Hining CIa in, U.S. Mineral Survey ITo. 330., the Gibson Lode ],lining Clarn, U. S. Mineral SUTvey Ira. 44., and the Stark County Lode Mining Claim, U. S. Mineral Survey Uo. 43. Also, tha t there is no lien nor tncumbrano e of any kind on the property.

LOCI. TIQJ\T

The group is situated on the Easterly side of Quartz Hill, in Irevada Hining District, Gilpin County, OoLor'ado , and adjoins the South boundary of the town of Central Sity. The freight and pass enger depot of the Colorado & SOllth ern Railroad is

mile

distant by wagon road, while the property itself is located on the best producing mountain in No r the r-n Colorado.

HISTORY

The Stark County and, t he Gibson Lodes were among the earliest discovered claims in the State of Colorado, and were first worked by Pil:e Peak settlers in 1859. The Barnes lode claim has nearly as old a record as the other two.

TRANSFOR:rATION

The Gilpin County Tramway, a narrow-gauged ore and coal steam railway, passes within a hundred feet of the working shaft, and a spur track runs into the basement of the shaft house.

The tramway conveys the are from the mine to the mills and ore buying sampler sat Bl ack Hawk for $.50 per ton •

2-GENEFLL GHAfu\GTERISTICS OF THE VEINS.

The strike or course of the Barnes vein is North-East and South-West, while the strike of the Stark County and the Gibson

veins is nearly East and West. The dip of the Barnes vein is to the South-East, while that of the Stark comity and the Gibson is n earLy

vertical, with a slight pitch to the North. The hangf ng and tbe foot walls of the veins i.s Gneissic Grani te, which is the prevailing country rock of the district.

The ve mc consist of quartz rock, carrying iron and copper pyri ties, and a friable gangue rock filling impregnated with gold b ea ring or e. The ve ins are from 3 to 5 fe et in width, 2 to 3 feet of which is high-grade smelting ore, and me balance eood mill dirt.

DEVELOP1.TI'2TTS

The main working shaft is on the Barnes claim. It is 4 x 8 feet, timbered, and 750 feet deep.

From this shaft there are nine levels, at various depths of from

100 to 700 feet.

A drift on the Stark County vein from the Barne s 100 foot level, connects with a shaft sunk on the Gibson vein, and claim, about

100 feet South-'.'lest of the main working aha ft above mentioned.

The North-East end of the 500 foot level opens into the Quartz Hill Tunnel, which extends 1,500 feet lTortherly to i.ts portal in Nevada Gulch. This tunnel gives excellent drainage and ventilation to tho mine.

in length, runs within fDO feet of the Barnes mine, and a drift from that tunnel would open the property 1,400. feet below the surface, which would give stoping ground requiring many years to work out.

There is a stope over the

roo

foot level, 129 feet i.n length, and extending up to the 325 foot level. This, with the stoped in other parts of the mine, amount to less than one-eighth of the veins op ened up and eXI'as edt s0, if the "ore in sight" was figured, it 1'70uld amount to a Large .item.

Not until recently could ore running less than $25. a ton be mine d and s hipped at a profit, which accounts for th is Large Ore

reserve. Now, however, the milling and concentrating plants at Black Hawk return the miner a good profit on ore running l~ss than $10 a ton, which maken this ore reserve of great value.

Another. and very important feature in this connection, which can be better understood by referring again to the first

para-graph under "General Characteristics of the Veins", is, thet in sinking th e working s ha ft the first 150 fee t , the owners fa 11 owed the Stark County vein. At that point, the Stark County becomes more vertical, while the shaft dips to the south-East, followinp' th e Barnes vein. The Stark County vein carries much richer and bet-ter ore than the Barnes, which is proven by the fact that :fully three-fourths of the entire production of these properties was tak-en out of the short stope on the Stark County vein above the 150 foot level, and why the owner s should leave it, and follow the Barnes crevice, is one of those things hard to explain.

Howev e r, a sh art cro ss-cut from the 325 foo t level w ill open the Stark County vein at that d.epth, a nd give 175 feet of stoping grOund overhead. Similar cross-cuts run from the 400, 500, 600, and 700 foot levels, will open an immense amount of high-grade ore.

-4-In conclusion, it C8n t.r-uth f'ul.Ly be said that these properties . have all the requisites of a big dividend paying mine, viz;

Perfect ti tIe, Ample equipment,

Extensi ve devel cpmcnts, Good shipping facilities,

Convenient market for the ore, Perfect ventilation and drainage,

Splendid record for p ast production, Known and developed bodies of good ore,

Excellent labor conditions ani low cost of production.

Hespectfully submit ted,
