HESSTON495

A heavy-weight performer with the strength to keep going where others fail!

H

ere's the direct harvester that has the weight to

stay down where the beets are in hard soils and

keep digging

.

I

n mud,

it has the strength to

with-stand the strain of heavy drag.

E

xtra weight and

strength are built in everywhere. Structural

mem-bers are larger and formed of heavier gauge steel

to keep perfect alignment under extreme power

application. PTO and drives are stronger ... shafts

and bearings are

l

arger to take the punishment of

big horsepower in adverse soil conditions.

L

arger

belts and simplified drives are provided to withstand

the punishment of dust and mud.

Low-tare cleaning is possible even in so

i

l

condi-tions that stop other harvesters. 495 Spiral rienks

are an entirely new rienk concept. They contact

the beet more gently and clean each beet longer

than conventional rienks. Combined with unique

spiral grab rolls which are also a new Hesston

development,

you get the most thorough and

efficient method of removing b

r

ick-hard, sunbaked

soil. Spiral rienks and optional flighted grab rolls

are the right combinat

i

on for maximum cleaning

in muddy conditions. Low-maintenance operation

for many hours of dependable use in all conditions

is possible because of simplified belt and chain

d

r

ives. Such versatility and value in one harvester

is no accident. The 495 was designed by Hesston

harvesting specialists after they had care

f

ully

studied the needs of producers in all beet

produc-ing areas. That's why one direct harvester can

keep going and harvest more clean beets in any

soil with less maintenance than other direct

harvesters. It's simply a better direct harvester!

SIMPLICITY ... THE KEY TO THE 495's DEPENDABILITY!

LIFTER WHEELS

light draft!

29" one-piece, hard faced, re-rimmable wheels are set at the precise angle to compress the soil just below the beet bowl and pop the beets out without evertouchi ng them.

ROW FINDER, WHEEL CLOSE-UPS AND

ROCK SPRINGS

(extra)!

Reduced operator fatigue and use of less skilled operators is possible by adding a row finder. Has hydraulic linkage to steering cylinder and over-ride to start new rows. Universal valve adapts it to all tractor hydraulic systems. Wheel close-ups can improve tonnage when harvesting small beets in dry soil. Wheel and post assembly damage can be reduced with rock springs wherever soils are rocky.

OFFSET POSTS (extra)

For bed rows 14" and over,

you get correct wheel

lifting angle for "pop out"lifting.

POSITIVE LOAD ELEVATOR

Adjusts so you can load high sided trucks even if beets are wet and ton-nage is heavy. Quick

-detach flights make

spac-ing to match volume easy. Beets get thorough scrub-bing action all the way

up. Adjustable hood

per-mits truck load balancing.

HORIZONTAL ANO VERTICAL WHEEL ADJUSTMENT! You can adjust for bal-ance and for use in all types of planting patterns. Tires are 9:50 x 14, 6-ply implement.

ELECTRIC ELEVATOR CLUTCH!

You stay on the tractor and save time at turn

rows. Uses tractor's 12 volt electrical system.

SUPERIOR

CLEANING ACTION with NEW

SPIRAL

RIENK

SCREEN!

FLIGHTED

GRAB ROLLS

(extra)

A new concept in cleaning with a new high in effi-ciency is introduced by Hesston in the 495. In the rienk area, beets get their first dirt-removing wallop from steel flail paddles, then again in row 1 from steel plate, wobble-mounted rienks. Then they pass to rows 2 and 3 which are new,

open-center, spiral rienks which pinch off even stubborn baked-on dirt. Dirt loosened in rows 2 and 3, but still clinging to beets, is kicked off by another row

, of plate rienks (row 4) before

' beets are passed to the grab rolls. The great difference in rienk configuration causes beets to be tossed and tum-bled in the 17 sq. ft. of rienk area, far more than in con-ventional rienk beds. Final scrubbing occurs when beets tumble and turn between two new spiral grab rolls and two smooth rolls which give 12 sq. ft. of cleaning area. Spiral rienks and grab rolls remain at top cleaning efficiency, continuously because they remain clean constantly. In some mud conditions, flighted grab

rolls give the best scrubbing action. They can be interchanged easily and quickly. Both spiral and flighted rolls adjust for soil conditions and beet size.

POWER BAND BELT DRIVE AND

HEAVY-DUTY

GEAR BOXES!

Power Band belts,

instead of chains, drive the grab rolls. Here is where dust and mud is thickest. Belts give longer life and require less service than chains in this area. Belts give extra slip clutch type protection to grab rolls, too! Heavy-duty gear box has the heft to with-stand the punishment that 1,000 r.p.m. PTO tractors can give it.

COUNTERWEIGHTS (extra)! You can weight the 495 so it will break through hard

ground and stay down for efficient digging with up to 15, 75 lb. counterweights.

in tank harvesters. It has the balance and flotation

to keep going in adverse field cond

i

tions while

do

i

ng an excellent cleaning job. As tank load

in-creases more weight is transferred to the tractor

wheels givi

n

g them greater traction to keep going

in mud or soft fields. Light draft wheels and

adequate weight give it top lifting performance in

hard soil. Now it's tougher and stronger than

ever! The new PTO drive that operates at 540 or

1,000 r.p.m. and a larger reversible main gear box

will hand

l

e more horsepower and maintain an

adequate reserve for really tough going. The front

cross shaft and elevator drive shaft are increased

to

13/a"

and they now run in larger bearings. Primary

a

n

d secondary drive belts are now 2 HB Power

Band.

T

his larger shaft, bearing and belt strength

is in keeping with the increased capacity of PTO

and gear box.

Rolls adjust to vary spacing and amount of incline to suit beet size, soil moisture and soil type. Trash drops to conveyor belt which delivers it away from the harvester. Spud chain upper Cross Conveyor is used when grab rolls are not preferred.

You unload without spillage even into high-sided trucks, because the elevator is now deeper. Elec-tric clutch is operated from tractor seat for fast on-the-go operation. Slides guide unloading chain. Elevator folds down for transport or storage.

with Knife Topper on Model

30!

Chain driven gauge wheels, run-ning 15% to 20% faster than ground speed, hold beets steady as knives slice off tops. The heat treated knives are bracket mounted to a parallel linkage system so blades remain at the same angle as they rise or fall with the gauge wheels. Regardless of beet size, tops are always sliced parallel to the crown. A 2½" vertical and a 3" horizontal knife adjustment lets you compen-sate for variations in beet size and mode of planting. Gauge wheel height and tension is adjustable to top rankness and beet size .

...

or Disk Toppers on Model

30,40!

A larger slice is removed from large beets than from small ones because heavily reinforced, adjustable shoes ahead of disks raise or lower them according to the height of each beet. Parallel linkage holds disks at a constant angle to assure precision topping. Shock absorber prevents bounce as shoes go over beets of varying heights so you can maintain faster row speed. Coun-ter-balance springs compensate for rankness of tops. Disk life is

longer because both cutting edges can be used by interchanging them

MULTIPLE CLEANING ACTION

AS-SURES TOP GRADE FEED!

Four

rows of rubber mounted, steel tines, pick up severed tops. Tines start cleaning action as they carry

tops upward to rotating drum. Four rows of retractable fingers comb tops out of tines, carry tops to chain conveyor and then retract

into the drum. Combing and tum-bling assists in cleaning tops.

Steel tines are bolted to slip

clutch protected shaft, easy to

replace. They can be cut to form-flt the contours of your rows, and height Is adjustable.

Further cleaning occurs as tops are carried along the 30"

conveyors and are delivered to the windrow out of the way of harvesters and trucks. Hydraulically operated conveyor exten-sion adjusts from 60'' to 96" to put windrows where you want them regardless of planting pattern.

on units. Disks with new anti-wrap baffles throw cut tops to the center for more efficient pick-up. Tractor hydraulic system lifts topping units. Split drives give double slip-clutch protection. Improved lubrication, reinforced topper unit arm, and larger

lifting arms assure longer, more service-free topper unit life.

CLEAN SWEEP of BEETS AND ROWS!

Lifting is faster because

rear mounted, belt driven beaters sweep beets and rows clean of stems and trash. Four sets of free-swinging flails per row are clamped on the tubular shaft, and are easily moved to match them with rows. Flails are corrugated on one side and smooth on the other. They can be reversed to use the side best suited for the condition of the beets. Shaft can be raised or lowered

for desired impact on beets. Bearings are triple sealed to keep out dust or mud.
