Process control by traceability

To control a sawmill process, e.g. kiln-drying, an exten-sive amount of data is needed to obtain useful results. The amount of data needed depends on the variation in wood properties and is also influenced by process set-tings and influences external to the studied process.

SP Wood Technology can help

The method recommended by SP Wood Technology is to connect production data and raw material data. This is done by automatic marking with an individual code for each item. The code is read in the subsequent process steps.

Well-evolved solutions

To code the boards we either use an ink-drop printer or a laser. The code is read by camera technology. For logs we prefer to use RFID-transponders, since they simplify code-reading at the log sorter and saw line.

Developed in major EU-projects

Different solutions for wood tracing has been utilised by SP Wood Technology in one Nordic and two EU-projects. In the latest project RFID-transponders for logs were developed that do not cause problems even when ending up in wood pulp.

Simple installation

Installing traceability systems for boards from saw line to final sorting station implies a code printer and 2 – 3 code readers, i.e. in green sorting, stacking operation and final sorting. Simplified connection of code and data from the sawing, green sorting, stacking, and final sorting systems can be achieved by a simple sequence-/ time synchronization

Instant payback!

Consider that waste depending only on cracks and de-formations is around 5 % where each percentage point corresponds to somewhere between 1 and 2 € per m3.

SP Wood Technology is a major player in the development of the new bio based society. Our research and

develop-ment activities are dominated by large national- and international projects as well as industry projects. We are also acti-vely involved in standardization through CEN and ISO. SP Wood Technology has qualified resources for research as well as testing for a range of materials and products.

The department of Processing and Processes supplies the wood working industry with measuring tools developed from extensive research activities as well as from customer demands. Processing and Processes supply the industry with deve-lopment of new technology, methods, and processes in order to give the wood mechanical industry possibilities to deliver high quality products in a cost-efficient way.
