UPOOMING J.IEETING ON SALINITY CONTROL
A public meeting requesting public opinion on salinity-control
measures for the Uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers will be held at 8:00
p.m., Wednesday, September 19, 1979, in the Colorado-Ute Auditorium, 1505 Highway 550, ~bntrose, Colorado, Bureau of Reclamation Upper Colorado Regional Director Bill Plummer announced today.
This meeting, to be held in cooperation with the Uncompahgre
Valley ~later Users Association, will allow the public to express
opinions and to select their preferred method of reducing the amount
of salty wa"er entering the Uncc:npahgre and Gunnison Riv~rs
.-At a previous meeting in Olathe, a number of alternate solutions was presented for public consideration and evaluation. The resulting preferred alternatives will be presented at the September 19 meeting.
The purpose of the salinity-control project in the upper basin of
the Colorado River is to make the water less saline. If Congress ap

maintenance, and replacement (OM&R) contract is acceptable to the
water users, construction could begin about the mid-1980's. It is assumed that repayment for construction would be based on a formula
Congress authorized for a similar project in the Grand Valley: the
Federal Government would pay 75 percent of the costs, leaving 21~
percent and 3-3/4 percent for the lower and upper basin states to
pay, respectively. Once construction is complete, OM&R costs would be borne by the water users, as they are now.
