After a three-month closure due to COVID, the Arthur Lakes Library officially reopened its doors on June 22. Library visitors will find a much-altered landscape due to efforts to keep the community safe, including physical distancing measures, sanitizing equipment and mask requirements. All study and conference rooms remain closed at this times, reference and instruction services will continue on a virtual-only basis, and our popular library

programming events will look very different this fall. Some collections, including physical course reserves and Gadgets to Go, will not be available until further notice. Despite these necessary restrictions, we are really looking forward to seeing everyone in person again. We’ve missed you!

Please let us know how we can maximize library services during this extraordinary time.

– Carol E. Smith, University Librarian

As you may have heard, Teaching and Learning Librarian Brianna Buljung was recently

awarded a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant to lecture internationally in 2021. Brianna’s initial commitment to lead a graduate-level course on information research skills at the China University of Mining & Technology (CUMT) has unfortunately been impacted by recent political developments. We are saddened by the loss of the unique opportunity to engage with CUMT through the Fulbright grant. However, many in the library continue to advance our sister library relationship with research and long-distance collaboration. Brianna is pursuing an alternative grant placement for Spring 2021 and we will provide updates along the way.

The Fulbright Program is the nation’s flagship program for promoting positive international relationships and the free exchange of ideas via our nation’s brightest students, scholars, and educators. In a world with no shortage of Earth, Energy and

Environment challenges, it is critically important for a research-intensive academic

library like Arthur Lakes to actively participate in international initiatives to share

information. Brianna’s upcoming Fulbright Program experience - wherever she serves! - will directly contribute to this global conversation.

Donation

Thanks to a generous donation from Mr. Stan Dempsey, a strong

supporter of the Russell L. & Lyn Wood Mining History Archive, the Library's Digital Lab will acquire a new large format high-resolution scanner to support our Digital Archives Project.

This scanner will allow us to digitize historical maps and diagrams from special collections up to 42” wide and over 6’ in length. Digital versions will be made available to all users via

Mountain Scholar.

Memorial

Charles F. Dwyer, major

contributor to The Information Center for Ropeway Studies, passed away

Jan 9th. In lieu of flowers he asked that donations be made to the Center. Pre-Covid we were able to meet his three daughters Valerie, Janet, and Julie to hear stories and learn about Mr. Dwyer's career. Thank you for the lovely visit!
