Training for leaders and supervisors in

women's and children's health, 7.5 credits

Online training programme 4 August – 10 September 2020

A training for key persons in maternal and child health care and nutrition in Sub-Saharan African countries. Supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Purpose and goal

The overall goal of the course is that the participant should be able to:

• Describe the theoretical background to different learning models, apply knowledge of feedback and communication related to various tutorial models Reflect on the different roles of managers, students, the supervisor (in the team) and responsibilities in the training program Reflect on how different models can develop leadership and learning in the field of maternal and child health

Some of the topics that will be addressed

• How to encourage communication within and between interdisciplinary teams The use of accreditation systems and how to achieve sustainability How to encourage interdisciplinary multi-professional teamwork and what makes a team a team? How to systematically close the gap between what we know and what we do? How to utilize proven health interventions and evidence-based practices by choosing the right implementation strategies?

Target group

This course will educate key persons in maternal and child health and nutrition. The participants could be public health officials, primarily with a background in nursing and midwifery, in government institutions such as health and education ministries, public health authorities and public or private hospitals and universities with medical and nursing education as well as non-governmental organisations.

The course will seek to select a diverse group of participants with regards to gender, age, background (professional and personal) and roles/responsibility.

Course management

The course will run online, both through prerecorded webinars and videos as well as interactive live online (or phone based)

workshops and group work.

The course builds on the following components:

• The midwifery led interdisciplinary model of care.

Introduction to the woman’s pathway through the health care system

• Peer learning/inter-professional training/Learning activities and supervision/Teamwork

• Leadership and management: Identifying areas for improvement/ performance monitoring. Assign staff to be responsible for improvement.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements You apply by submitting a CV and motivation letter including how you are relevant to the target group, your background, motivation for applying as well as a letter from your employer supporting your participation in the program.

Selection based on the following criteria

• Target group and strategic fit

• Management level position and responsibility

• Relevance of your role and support from your employee organisation

• Background and motivation for applying, and utilizing the experience and network after the program
