NO BOUNDARIES BETWEEN ROOMS

BETWEEN THE WALLS A NEW BATH IN KREUZBERG, BERLIN

(2)

BERLIN

Berlin

The new site I have chosen for the building is situated between two firewalls in Böckhstrasse 23-24. This is only 2 minutes walk from the U-bahn station Schönleinstrasse. And the adress is a side street to Kottbusser Damm, one of the most frequented streets in Kreutzberg.

It will make the site very attractive and easy to reach. This building site has been, and is partly still used as a playground, for table-tennis and other ballgames etc. Now the place is very worn down, the surrounding concrete firewalls are covered with graffitti. It is a very central building site in Kreuzberg but still abandoned.

My idea is to create a bath for local residents in the area, familiar and easy to reach. Earlier I had in mind to build a Hamam, a Turkish bath, that was the original idea. During the work process I have changed direction. I have kept the orignal idea but expanded it, to create a place where people from all different backgrounds and traditions can meet in a public bath and feel comfortable. In this place there will be qualities and influences inspired from bath traditions in many parts of the world. For instance :Turkish hamam, Japanese steam and other special and traditional baths. A mixture where the public could feel a good welcoming atmosphere, wherever they come from. This establish- ment will contain a great deal: cafe, sundecks, garden, lockerrooms, showers, wc, pools and a laundry room. This bath house will become an attractive place with pools inside and outdoors, a construction which is flexible for alterations depending on the weather and season of the year. A main thought is that the bath will be designed to allow an open flow between the different functions in the house. The openness cre- ates an atmosphere where it is easy to feel comfortable and to socialize. The house contains both a bath and a laundry place, where you can do the laundry at the same time as you have a bath, take a swim and meet people

During the work progress I have always considered the history of the city, especially when it was divided and controlled for nearly 30 years after WW II. The Berlin Wall has had great influence on the urban environment, in material and mental aspects. This has inspired me to create a place and a building, where freedom and openness are characterisitcs for all functions in this Bath-house.

The building is constructed on a concret-ground. On the basement-level there are offices, lunchroom, storage- rooms and space for technics.

The upper floors are constructed by pillars of steel and concrete beams. The facade is made of glass, with windows opening inwards. On the ground-floor there will be laundry-room, cafeteria, toilets, elevator, and also a hotwater- pool and a training-pool. On the inner-yard there are room for sun bathing and picnics, there is also a baby-pool for summer-use. On the first floor there will be changing, showers and toilets. On the second floor is the place for hot baths. The tubs are lined up all along the floor. The third floor has rest-rooms and a lounge with a small library, with books and magazines, comfortable chairs, where you can sit and read and take it easy waiting for the laundry to get dry. On the top floor (fourth) there is a roof-terrace. A garden with lounge-suites, sundeck-chairs and outdoor showers creates a relaxed and pleasant environment for the visitors.

Map of the Berlin Wall, Kreuzberg area was on the west side of the wall.

The City and the Place

All over Berlin there are lots of abandoned houses and infill lots. One explanation to this is that after World War II, there were more houses built, than what was needed for the growing population.

Many of these places are centrally situated and are often used as temporary playgrounds or garbage dumpsters. I can see a great potential in theese places and I believe I can make a positive addition to the environment and for the city by using such a place.

Kreuzberg is one of Berlins most densely populated areas. The district of Kreuzberg is situated in the south eastern part of Berlin and has about 150.000 inhabitants. One third of the population are turk- ish immigrants, which has given the quarters the nickname little Istambul.

The main part of the population of Kreuzberg are immigrants and in 2006 more than 31% of the residents of the area lived there without a German citizenship.

This is an eclectic and dynamic area. The inhabitants are a mixture of people who have taken different paths in life, of different religions and diverse cultures. There are muslims, anarchists, environmental activists, artists, musicians, actors. People with mixed sexual preferences and transgender, hipsters and media people of all kind.

The city after the war and the heavily bombed areas. The Berlin Wall was built in August 13, 1961 till November 9, 1989 separated the West and East Berlin. Wall came down in 1989 and was torn down for the most part in 1990.

Images from Kreuzberg Many residents in Kreuzberg live in houses without hot running water, showers and laundry facilities. The Swedish standard with access to

laundry rooms in every apartment building does not exist in Kreuzberg. And in many other ways this area has not reached general standard of living regarding housing in Berlin. The local Bath House was traditionally the place where people went to clean and wash themselves in earlier times when no houses or apartments at all had running water.

In Berlin, all public baths belong to Berliner Bäder Betriebe (BBB) a municipal organization. All public baths in Berlin have the the same basic entrance-fee. But extra charge is added for use of sauna, massage etc. That can make the total price rise up to the double for the visitors. My intention is that the whole experience, and access to all facilities in the house, like bathtub bathing.laundry etc, shall be included in the basic entrance-fee.

I have a wish to create a building that has a low energy consumption. During summer, solar cells will provide for the main energy suppy that is needed. And other environmental-saving alternatives can also be used, to keep concious and longlasting profile to this local Public Bath- house. The connection with the fact that this site earlier has been used as a place for physical acivities, a playground in the middle of the city, felt interesting and thrilling to develop more. I would like this local Bath-house to become a natural and spontaneous meeting-place between people in this area. The earlier function of this building-site, has already many advantages to be able realize that.

reference project SHIBAURA HOUSE by Kohkoku Seihan is located in Shibaura

Tokyo, Japan. It is a multistorey building containing flexible workshop spaces, that is open for the pubilc.

For groups to book meetings and have gatherings such as conferences, events, lectures and exhibitions. The tensioned steel structure supports a glass curtain-wall penetrated with intermittent setbacks containing open air terraces on the front.

When entering the premises, visitors find the ground floor lounge which is open to the public, furnished with chairs and tables for universal use. The upper study levels are connected to the primary patio with a curving staircase. The “Bird Room”

is situated at the top storey, providing a commodious space for dance classes and also municipal gatherings, filled with ample daylight.

The house is a meeting-point for the people in the area and used by them.I would like to create a similar feeling, but with the activities in the bath-house combine some every day do- ing duties with pleasure.Such as - you need to do laundry and exercise, let´s do it at the same time!

The concept is designed according to the possible needs and wishes of the visitors from the neighbourhood. In the area of Kreuzberg, social differences are more evident than in many other districts in Berlin. Unemployment is high, and the gap in economical assets between people is increasing. Most of the recidents in this area may not own or have access to a summerhouse, or be able to afford traveling to seasideplac- es out of town. Hopefully, this local bath house can provide a social meeting- place for bath , swimming, sun and recreation, all year round.
