Each year more than half tonne of cement is produced per person living on earth: that is about 3 billion tonnes! This mega production system is responsible of more than 5% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. By drawing from the fields of Industrial Ecology, Cleaner Production, and In-dustrial Symbiosis and using Life Cycle Assessment, this study provides a comprehensive methodological and empirical approach for analysing and assessing different ways that a cement production system can be developed.
