Medical Science with focus on Surgery
Per Essving (1960) received his medical degree in 1987 at Uppsala University. After completing his train-ing in orthopedic surgery in 1994, he has worked at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Örebro Univer-sity Hospital. He was registered as a PhD student at Örebro University in 2006 and professor Kjell Axelsson has been his research supervisor.
The acute pain following knee arthroplasty surgery is often severe. A new technique for postoperative pain management, local infiltration analgesia (LIA), has recently been developed. LIA involves a long-acting local anesthetic (ropivacaine), a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (ketorolac) and epinephrine infiltrated into the knee joint during surgery and injected postoperatively via a catheter. This thesis presents four studies investigating the role of LIA following knee arthroplasty.
