Last year our alumni and friends made contributions ranging from 50 kronor to 1 million kronor to the SSE Annual Fund.

This fund supports students, teaching, research, and overarching strategic initiatives. Flexible funding of this kind helps address the School’s most pressing needs whenever and wherever they arise.

Several initiatives were supported by the Annual Fund in 2019, such as:

Career Management for Students

• Students received one-on-one coaching sessions to support their professional and personal development.

• Students also received access to a new online career portal, which allows them to find job and internship offers, and has instructional videos that help them prepare their CVs and interviews.

Widening Participation Initiatives

• Student ambassadors traveled to high schools throughout Sweden to recruit the best and the brightest students from areas that have not traditionally been represented at SSE.

• Female SSE Bachelor students served as mentors to female high school students through the SSE Sisters Program, with the aim of supporting and encouraging young women to study business.

“I appreciated the SSE Sister Program because I got to hear my mentor’s thinking before it was time to select a university and how she felt during her studies.

She helped me to be certain that my choice was the best.”

“I love to work with SSE students and their brilliant minds. When connecting a brainy perspective to a deeper drive and a sense of meaning, you can do almost anything. I am convinced that reflection and self-awareness (that coaching sessions offer) are key-competences, that make students better

equipped to tackle both studies and professional life with resilience and courage.”

Today, top-tier business schools compete globally for the same pool of exceptional students. The SSE Masters programs are highly competitive, and some of our top candidates opt for other schools with generous financial aid packages. That’s why donations that support scholarships for international students are strategically important. Alongside SSE’s academic reputation, scholarships represent one of the School’s most important tools for international recruitment.

“Without the scholarship I received from an SSE alumni, I would not have been able to afford the cost of my studies. I am learning from the best teachers and I am surrounded by exceptional classmates in a country with many opportunities. Thank you for allowing me to reach my goals. You have not only impacted my life, but you have also impacted the lives of a whole

generation of people.”

SSE upgraded the classrooms to support flexible and agile teaching and learning. The renovations included adding the latest technology to allow for recording, broadcasting and the interaction of speakers throughout the world.

SSE students’ learning experiences have been improved, and their creativity, collaboration and innovation has also been enhanced.

9 Two of the classrooms were donated by SSE alumna Birgitta Sherman and her husband, Philip Sherman;

one of the rooms was named after Birgitta’s parents, Axel and Elsa Lobjär. Another classroom was named after Ragnar Lindgren, a beloved SSE teacher who was instrumental in the formation of the SSE Department of Finance in the 1990s.

”The newly renovated classrooms are amazing. They are equipped with lots of new digital tools and have a whole new aura that really encourages learning. It is great to actually see the

change the donations can make.”

S T I M U L A T I N G R E F L E C T I O N , S E L F - AWA R E N E S S , A N D C U L T U R A L L I T E R A C Y SSE Art Initiative generates art exhibitions, art talks and symposiums for students, researchers and the public.

Through the arts and humanities, new perspectives become a part of the SSE experience, offering opportunities for reflection and self-awareness. The goal is to advance cultural literacy and develop new knowledge, and also to encourage empathy among future leaders. SSE Art Initiative actively imbeds art in the SSE academic environment to make it more knowledge- intensive, through screenings of video- based art, photography and installations by contemporary artists. The symposiums contextualize and elaborate on topics conveyed by our art exhibitions. SSE Art Initiative is supported by several alumni, friends and the Jonas & Christina af Jochnick Foundation.

Last year, SSE Art Initiative activities included:

Video Screenings: Regular screenings of video art in the School’s Atrium, such as Roman Signer’s Action Sculptures, Mats Hjelm’s The Healer and Ann Lislegaard’s Pollen messages and Malstrømmen.

Art Talks: A series of seminars

organized by the Art Division, a branch of the Student Association, featured

11 artists such as Michael Johansson, Katja Larsson and Jens Fänge.

Research Colloquia: Presentations by Swedish and international scholars, such as Lars Östman (SSE), Otto Scharmer (MIT) and Helena Rosenblatt (CUNY) on interdisciplinary topics, open to the SSE community and the public.

SSE Literary Agenda: Students completed the first year of this reading program, in which they participated in author talks, small group discussions, and reflected on seven works of contemporary fiction.

Permanent Collection: Several new artworks were added to SSE’s Permanent Collection, including three artworks by Åsa Norberg and Jennie Sundén in one of the newly renovated classrooms. These artworks were donated by Veronica and Lars Bane.

Exhibitions: The Bonnier Staircases opened in September through a unique collaboration between SSE, Bonniers Konsthall and the Maria Bonnier Dahlin Foundation. The two main staircases flanking the entrance to SSE’s main building were filled with works by contemporary Swedish artists who have received grants from the foundation.

Beautiful pieces by Cecilia Edefalk, Karin Mamma Andersson, Gunnel Wåhlstrand and many other artists are on loan from the foundation for a lengthy period of time – a wonderful source of inspiration for all who use the stairs, be it to visit or on a daily basis.
