Edvin Erdtman did his undergraduate studies in chemistry and mathematics and received his Master of Science degree in chemistry from Linköping University, Sweden 2005. He has been working since 2006 with his Ph.D. studies in biophysical chemistry at Örebro Life Science Centre and the Modeling and Simulation Research Centre at the School of Science and Technology, Örebro University, Sweden. In 2008 he received his Licentiate degree in biophysical chemistry.
The treatment of cancer with the photodynamic therapy method has been in-creased in the latest decades. 5-aminolevulinc acid (5-ALA) is used as a prodrug in PDT in treatment of pre-malignant skin disorders. Various derivatives of 5-ALA have been developed to enhance the effect of the drug.
This thesis focuses on the 5-ALA and derivatives thereof. Its properties, reactivity, lipid penetration and metabolism have been studied by various computational methods.
