2-row or 3-JOW ... hydraulic steering ..

3-1/2-ton tank ... fast, easy hookup .. .

5 mph speed ... 2-minute unloading

..

It takes plenty of truck capacity to keep up with the 223, shown here harvesting beets in California.

You harvest up to 30 acres a day

Roll out a clean ton a minute, when the yield

is there and the going's good. Why not? Your beets are valuable; so is your time. Both bring maximum returns with the John Deere 223 Beet Harvester.

Pop 'em out three rows at a time, in 20- or 22-inch rows . . . or two rows at a time, in 20-to 36-inch rows. On the fiat or on beds, irrigated or dryland, large beets or small, in every field condition, the John Deere 223 has proved itself a winner. Yields as high as 50 tons have been handled successfully . . . with tare rates as low as 3 percent, practically no haul-back.

Here's a machine aimed straight at capacity, versatility, low tare, easy operation, strength and durability. You can depend on it for fast, clean, steady work when time is money.

The 223's tank-type design lets you open up fields and lands easily; allows you to unload on the go or at row ends. You can free your tractor for other jobs in less than five minutes.

ime and costs

No bottlenecks

The design of the John Deere 223 leaves no place for beets to hang up or bridge as they pour into the big tank and out again.

From the 12-square-foot cleaning bed, beets are hoisted on a 3-foot-wide rear elevator with high peg flights - then they tumble into a steep-sided tank, made of .075-inch steel with rein-forced corners. Tank rests on a box-like support made of quarter-inch steel plate.

Bottom of the tank is an open conveyor chain which moves beets to the unloading elevator.

Big cleaning bed receives beets from optional rubber or steel paddles. Slide-away shield (not

shown) is held by one locking pin. Alternate rows of steel and rubber star wheels resist rock-jamming. All steel star wheels optional.

drive

Chain is used for power transmission - no belt drives. ASA 50 and 60 chain is used except on

Extra strength in critical parts

Typical of the built-in strength of the 223 is the spindle supporting the digger wheels - it is one piece of high-carbon steel, three inches in diameter, with 2-1/16-inch shoulders, welded to a 4 x 4-inch pedestal.

Heavy-duty digger wheels, operating at fixed angle, squeeze beets loose and lift them un-broken. Solid-rim wheels, made of tough modu-lar iron, are 29 inches in diameter. Spacers be-tween wheels and hub provide adjustment for

Big

wheels

The 223 travels on 11.25 x 24-inch tires. They provide good flotation, light draft, and easy steering in mud and loose ground. Two-wheeled design makes it easier to stay on the row. The 8-bolt wheels are mounted on heavy-duty spin-dles and tapered roller bearings. Tread is adjust-able from 80 to 106 inches, with axle brackets available for 2-row digging in 20-, 22-, 24-, 34-, and 36-inch row spacing.

Beet harvesting was never

so sure and easy

You don't need two heads and four hands to dig and unload at the same time with the 223. Just flip a toggle switch near the back of the tractor

seat - a 12-volt electric clutch operates the

unloading elevator, and you empty the 3% ton tank in about two minutes.

Following the rows accurately is just as easy. Simply move a hydraulic-control lever and a re-mote cylinder adjusts the hitch to keep the har-vester on the rows, even on irregular ground.

Optional beet-cleaner attachment adds 141/2 square feet

of cleaning capacity. Mounts just above the tank.

Spring-loaded rolls have spiral flights which crush clods. Dirt

and debris drop on conveyor below.

Steel paddles can be ordered in place of rubber paddles. Split design permits width adjustment so the paddle can act as a mud scraper for digger wheels.

Extra equipment

I

Row-Finder attachment guides the harvester along rows automatically. Two feeler arms, resting on the row, actu-ate a sensitive hydraulic valve which controls the angling cylinder. Adjustable for all conditions.

Hood for the unloading elevator assists in loading beets into the truck more evenly from side to side. Tilt is adjustable by a control lever on rear side of elevator.

Beets of any size can be topped just right. Differential cutting rate can be adjusted to take more off a large beet than a small one.

32 Topper mounts on harvester,

making a complete once-over machine that doesn't tie up a tractor. Has same

units as the 320.

Fast,

accurate

toppers

mount on

harvester

or

on tractor

The two types of John Deere Beet Topper are basically the same except for drives and other adapting parts.

The 32 Topper mounts on the 223 Harvester, making a complete pull-type machine. The 320 Topper is mounted on the tractor that pulls the harvester, or on a separate tractor.

Either way, you get accurate topping at speeds up to 4 mph, in two 20- to 36-inch rows or three 20- to 24-inch rows at a time.

The clog-resistant cutout disks can be set to

take a bigger bite on large, high beets than on small low beets. Fins toss tops into windrow. You top at good speed because units adjust quickly

to

each beet. Gearboxes are up on the frame, not down near disks. Less weight on finder shoes and disks makes them less ponder-ous, less likely to push over high beets. A coun-terbalance spring also helps avoid beet breakage. Down-pressure springs give positive cut. Hy-draulic shock absorbers are available.
