RE: Improved Beet Harvesting Machine. Believing that you are interested in any late improvements
in beet harvesting machines, I am enclosing herewith copies of the following documents:
1. United States Letters Patent, No. 2,061,834, granted to me on November 24, 1936. 2. United States Letters Patent, No. 2,0?l,738,
granted to me on February 23, 1937.
3. Copy of pending application for United states Letters Patent on Improved Beet Harvesting Machine, together with photostatic copies of drawings, as well as supplementary specifi-cation and supplementary drawings on improve-ments not presented to the Patent Office.
It is appreciated that the specifications of these patents and of my third application are somewhat lengthy
am
that the improvements are numerous. Accordingly, I invite your particular attention to the improved means fo automatic opening and closing of hopper doors as described and illus-trated in my patent, No. 2,061,834. Also, to the beet top-ping mechanism and the belt protecting shields disclosed in my patent, No. 2,071,738.You may ignore the shock absorbing elements and mounting for the beet lifter holders shown in Figures 24 and 25 ot my
pending application and also the means for disengaging the footbar from the steering post. Your attention, in this latter regard, is directed to the improvements in steering facilities as set forth in the supplementary drawings, Fig-ures 29 and 30, and description thereof in the supplementary specification.
With particular reference to the improvements set forth in my pending application, your attention is especially invited to the beet leaf bending wheel mounted in front of the lift-ing and conveylift-ing belts. This wheel serves to place a larger number of leaves together for the belts to grip and thereby
insures the pulling of the loosened and partly lifted beets out of the ground. The device for preventing beets getting

A study of the several patents md pending application will
afford a clear picture of the many improved features. While I have provided a beet deflector in the latest improvement, see pending application, such beet deflector is.not essential. I have provided the same to cause especially large beets to fall sideways onto the beet elevator for if these large beets were to stand upright when movable frame .lfII is lowered, there would be contact between the beets on the elevator and the parts on the movable frame. This contact can be avoided if the conveying belts and parts are still in gear when the beet lifters have been raised just out of the ground by advancing the vehicle only a few feet to pass the beets from the belts. There is enough clearance between the rear portion of the mov-able frame and the beet elevator since the latter passes under rollers 44 and 45. Another way to avoid the contact between especially large beets on the elevator and the parts on fra~e FII is to raise the front of the frame short of its full
heighth, giving more clearance at the rear.
It may be that you desire to employ a trailer for receiving the topped beets but I feel that this would be an encumbrance slowing down the operatio~s of unloading the beets. Eor that reason, I have provided a hopper with automatic opening and closing of doors, see patent No. 2,061,834.
The movable frame FII 1s well balanced and relatively easy to shift from a non-working position to a working position, and
vice-versa, The number or hand-levers for operating the machine has been reduced to a minimum.
1'he enclosed documents are submitted for the purpose of having an expression from you relative to outright purchase of my two indicated patents as well aa the pending application on which I expect favorable action from the ~atent Office. Any offer that you may care to make will receive the fullest considera-tion and, of course, will entitle you to incorporate the im-provements described and illustrated in the supplementary specification and drawings.
enclosures.
very truly yours,
~ .
