Wound contamination can be reduced thorough preoperative skin prepara-tion to decrease the amount of bacteria on the patient’s skin. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the effect of different preoperative skin preparations applied to patients prior to cardiac surgery, including 0.5% chlorhexidine solution in alcohol, plastic adhesive drape, and microbial skin sealant. Bacterial samples focused on measuring time to re-colonization were taken during interventions, and the most frequent bacterial species present intraoperatively were CoNS and P.acnes. Knowledge has been lacking in this surgical area, so hopefully, the findings of this research can contribute to evidence-based guidelines for preoperative skin preparation, and thereby increase patient safety by decreasing the risk of surgical site infection.
