delia latina is a researcher in developmental psychology at the Center for Developmental Research at Örebro University. She earned her Master’s degree in Criminal and Investi-gative Psychology at University of Turin, Italy, in 2010. Her research interest concerns adolescents’ maladaptive behaviors. Specifically, she is interested in the development of self-harming behaviors during adolescence, and the interpersonal as well as adjustment problems related to it. For most people, adolescence is a time for engaging in some kind of risk be-haviors before reaching adulthood. However, although some risk bebe-haviors such as drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes are socially accepted, others are not. Self-harming behaviors are among the latter. Self-harming behaviors, such as cutting, burning or hitting oneself, are particularly common among adolescents aged between 12 and 16 years. As self-harm is a possible precursor of extremely negative outcomes, suicide among others, it has been the subject of much debate among researchers. However, many important questions re-garding this phenomenon remain unanswered. For example, since self-harm is a problematic behavior, especially during adolescence, what can be done to prevent adolescents from engaging in it? Although the current research is analyzing the characteristics of adolescent self-harmers, is there anything that has not been brought in the spotlight yet, which deserves our particular atten-tion? For instance, which are the specific interpersonal as well as adjustment problems of adolescents who decide to harm themselves? In this dissertation I address these questions. The results show that ease of communication with parents helps adolescent girls not to use self-harm when they experience de-pressive symptoms. The results also reveal important aspects concerning the adolescents’ interpersonal and adjustment difficulties, such as mutually hostile relationships in different daily settings and a co-occurrence of internalizing and externalizing problems. Taken together, the results of this dissertation provide the current literature with an understanding of the factors that can mitigate self-harming behaviors, as well as with a comprehensive picture of the interpersonal and adjustment features of adolescent self-harmers.
