• The decision on eHealth by the Council in December 2009 identified need for action on four specific areas:

– 1) Legal, ethical and regulatory issues – 2) Semantics and terminology

– 3) Identification and authentication – 4) Standardisation

• epSOS strategically important for concrete cooperation!

• The proposal for a European Directive on patients’

rights in cross-border healthcare means that:

– all EU citizens will have a legal right to ask for planned treatment in another Member State under certain conditions.

– continuity of care should be guaranteed by making sure that relevant medical information can follow the patient across organisational or national borders.

– a structured cooperation on eHealth shall be established by the Member States, supported by the European Commission, with focus on safe electronic transfer of medical data.

• Large Scale Pilot funded by European Comission and participating nations (€ 40 million)

Main Achievements

• Services for exchange of ePrescriptions and patient summaries in cross-border setting.

• Currently eight participating nations in live mode, more on the way

• Support to the EC in providing all EU MS, through the eHealth network, with a non- exhaustive list of data to be included in patient summary
