The task is to design a retrofit to existing the National Museum building. The building will complement the museum's activities and also have a public part. The program for the building contains both studios, office spaces and warehouses. The idea is that you want to move the functions that are currently housed inside the National Museum and the annexe to the building to free up more public areas and open up the museum.
I have chosen to work with an independent building on the site, both to open up meseumparken and make it more attractive and to make the transportation of art in and out smooth. Communication between the two volyms occurs during ground even where the trays are placed. By having a distance between the two volumes of the land it gave me more freedom to interpret both the National Museum and the surroundings in my architectural expression. I have chosen to work with an open volume, both in front and flat. My thought is that the building should communicate and visually open up in all directions. I want to do to give the site a facility that not lock the walkway that goes around the National Museum.
I have placed my public part of the building on the ground floor and some underground. This will create new streams in the park. The rest of the house is private to the National Museum. Internal communication is done either by the elevator core that is placed in the center of the building or the stair system that is located along the outer facade. The art is loaded in on the ground floor where the cargo intake is situated in the northwest corner of the building. The art is then transported up or down through the building, depending on the purpose.
