New driving technologies provide a possibility to unburden the driver and instead let the car drive automatically and safely. Some automatic systems are already common in cars such as automatic gears and adaptive cruise control and more systems are expected to follow. These systems are developed with the prime goal of reducing driver demands and the risks on road. However, they also change the role of the driver that may add new risks in the tasks of driving. Since the role of the driver changes the methods evaluating the driving also needs to change. Up to now driving has usually been evaluated as the ability to stay on the road, keeping the distance to cars ahead and keeping the driving speed. In automated driving these aspects may no longer be in control of the driver and other aspects of driver behavior might be of higher concerns. In a new project called MODAS methods of evaluating driving will be adjusted to suit the new role of driving.
